<3 ABOUT US <3 - The Jade Project started when a transgender woman in my life (who asked me not to share her name) called me and asked me to come to her house to take care of her. She thought she was just sick, but her mother was convinced she was “on her period.” She craved junk food, had abdominal cramps and a headache, and her mood constantly swung between sad and angry. It lasted for just under a week, and then spontaneously went away. None of us could figure it out. - I looked everywhere for information on trans girls experiencing menstrual symptoms on HRT, but all I got was anecdotal evidence. “My friend’s hairdresser is a trans woman who complains about her period every month,” and the like. Not a single study, survey, or article. She looked for information too, and ended up on a toxic, transphobic, and misogynistic website whose hate caused her to have a panic attack. Not only did our wild goose chase not turn anything up, it harmed her in the process. - There’s no way she’s the only trans girl who has experienced this situation. This community doesn’t deserve the pain of being kept in the dark, or the sadness that comes with encountering hate online in the search for information. The Jade Project aims to collect experiences from trans women nationwide, so that we can assess how often menstrual symptoms really occur, and make this information widely and freely available to prevent any more people experiencing what she did.
