@hillaryclinton (@make_repost) γ»γ»γ» For a new project, #ThisIs18, @nytgender asked women around the country what advice we'd give to our 18-year-old selves. To young Hillary in Park Ridge, Illinois, I'd say: For a girl who likes to have a plan, you're going to have to take a lot of leaps of faith. But believe in yourself, youβre doing great. https://www.instagram.com/p/BpFaW97h5x-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1s6bi9rbr95oa

#ThisIs18 Sharing this because of the nicest article I've read in quite a while. This was me, 18, in 2013; trying to figure out fun, easy-to-do Physics experiments for a college project, with my best friends. To this girl in the photo, I'll only say, take things slow, one day at a time. Things will go wrong, but they'll also get better. Life will be a constant process of give and take, and you'll have to pick and cherish whatever little moments of happiness you can find. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just how life is. Don't let the troughs bring you down. You're better than that; you deserve better than that. @pragya.chawla I'm sure you remember this day. One amongst the many best ones I've spent in your company. β€ You're also the one behind the lens. So, thanks. π Link to this wonderful article: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/10/11/style/this-is-18.html Share yours too, if you like, and join the celebration of girlhood. π (at Miranda House) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo_v0R_Bsz3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1s4fqu4ui6uim

Getting on the #thisis18 and #nationaldayofthegirl and #nationalcomingoutday bandwagons. I don't have any photos of myself at 18. I'm 16 in this photo, and the only reason it exists is that it is my high school yearbook photo. I was so convinced that I was hideous, worthless, broken beyond repair that I avoided having my photograph taken, I avoided mirrors, I couldn't bear to look at myself. For decades. My message to my younger self is don't listen to the people who tell you you are less than. Don't listen to the people who tease, who belittle, who weaponize your name into a sexual attack. It's okay to be genderfluid. It's okay to be touch averse and no one has the right to humiliate you over it. It's okay to be gray ace, and no, you DON'T have to like what someone does to you just because they expect you to. Don't pay any attention to that gaslighting narcissistic asshole in your life. He never has your best interests in mind, and he never will. He's bad karma, Batman. Celebrate your weird. Embrace your different. It's okay that you don't fit in with nasty people - you'll learn you don't want to, and they don't deserve you. You'll find your people. And you will all be beautiful together. #iamwhoiam #iamaworkinprogres https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo21ayPHzMD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1v6y6txlrezvw
What does life look like for girls turning 18 in 2018? We gave young women photographers around the world an assignment: Show us 18 in your
This is 18:
through girlsβ eyes.
βWhen Malala Yousafzai turned 18, she opened a school for Syrian refugee girls, calling on leaders from around the world to provide βbooks not bullets.β
It was at 18 that Cleopatra became ruler of Egypt, in 51 B.C.E., and Victoria the queen of Great Britain, in 1837.
By the time she was 18, Britney Spears had had two No. 1 albums on the Billboard chart, and Serena Williams had won the U.S. Open.
Emma Gonzalez, 18 now, has become a global leader in the movement to end gun violence.
No pressure, right?
Eighteen is an age. But itβs also something more. Itβs a moment, a rite of passage, a gateway to adulthood.
In the United States, 18 means you can finally vote, sign a lease on an apartment, obtain a credit card and buy a Juul.
In China and parts of Canada, 18 grants you entrance to a pub, while for most Israelis, it means a mandatory draft into the military.
By 18, one in five women across the globe will be married. Millions will enter college or university.
βThis is 18β aims to capture what life is like for girls turning 18 in 2018 across oceans and cultures β in Mexico and Mississippi, Ramallah and Russia, Bangladesh and the Bronx.
But while girls have long been the subject of the photographerβs lens, they have far less often been behind it. So we asked young women photographers to document girls in their communities β taking the photos and conducting the interviews themselves. Each photographer was paired with a professional mentor to guide them through the process.
The result is a celebration of girlhood around the world β across 12 time zones and 15 languages, featuring 21 subjects and 22 photographers. (Yeah, it was a lot.)
Weβre thrilled to present #ThisIs18 β a look at girlsβ lives, through girlsβ eyes.βββ
