Declan was sitting in a lounge chair in the living room, flipping through a magazine—one of Jenna’s, of course. Vogue. Hey, he was versatile.

He skimmed a few articles, turning pages absentmindedly until something caught his eye. His brows furrowed. Reaching for his glasses, he adjusted them and read the passage again.

“No, this cannot be real.” His voice was laced with disbelief. “Sweetheart, come here—listen to this.”

He held up the magazine slightly as he read aloud. “This article says that even in healthy, loving relationships, partners experience terrible sex… and that women often fake it.”

Declan looked up at her, completely baffled.

“Have you ever had terrible sex with me? Even… bad?” he asked, genuinely concerned now. “Because if you have, you need to tell me. I need to know if I’m doing something wrong.”

A brief pause followed.

“…Have you ever faked it with me?”

The whole thing made absolutely no sense to him—and frankly, he didn’t like it.

It had been back to back meetings all morning. Declan hated that part of the job. He told his secretary to hold all his calls for the rest of the day. He left Fidus, set on a particular location.

He knew Jenna was busy. They were preparing for a fashion show at the end of the week. He didn't intend on distracting her. But, he liked watching his wife work. Besides, he was technically an investor.

He drove across town and arrived at the studio. Declan greeted security on the way in. He was waved through to the back. As he moved, chaos erupted around him. Yeah, they were definitely busy.

“Favorite thing?” Declan echoed, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “Just one? That’s not possible.”

His expression softened.

“Her smile. The way she throws herself into life—completely, without hesitation. Her passion… it’s infectious.”

A small pause, like he’s weighing the next part.

“Least favorite…” he repeated, glancing off for a moment before a hint of amusement slipped in.

Not nearly as much as he used to. After his heart attack six years ago, Declan made some changes. These days, drinking is more occasional than routine. When he does drink, it’s usually good scotch or whiskey. He’s very much a quality over quantity person now.

Running clears his head. Long drives help when he needs to think. Cooking helps when he doesn’t want to think.

Declan’s life is loud — investors, meetings, constant decisions — so recharging usually means finding moments where nobody needs anything from him for a little while.

👻 : if your muse could live the life of anyone else for a day, who would they choose? what would they hope to learn about this person?

Nobody. Mostly because Declan genuinely loves the life he’s built. But also because if he swaps lives with someone else for a day, then technically they get his life for a day too — and absolutely not. Too many meetings. Too many responsibilities. Too much risk. He’s keeping his own life.

And his own wife.

Golf is the only sport Declan regularly plays. Watching sports, however? Completely different story. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, racing, wrestling, golf — if there’s competition involved, chances are he’ll watch it.

At fourteen, Declan lied about his age to get his first job bagging groceries. Minimum hiring age was sixteen. By the time his boss figured it out, customers loved him and he was already too valuable to lose. Technically dishonest? Yes. Would he do it again? Probably.

Not really. Declan is much more likely to memorize historical events, market trends, or random facts than movie quotes.

Not anymore.

Madelyn struggled with drugs and alcohol as a teenager after falling into an abusive relationship with an older man who isolated her from everyone she loved. By twenty-one, addiction had taken almost everything from her.

Her younger sister, Maggie, found her, helped bring her home, and supported her through rehab.

Madelyn has been clean ever since.

Recovery wasn’t just about getting sober — it was about rebuilding herself from the ground up. She worked too hard for the life she has now to risk losing it.

As proud as Madelyn is of the life she built for herself, if she had to choose someone else’s life for a day?

Maggie.

Partially because being an FBI agent for a day sounds objectively cool, but mostly because Madelyn has always admired her younger sister.

There’s also a part of her that wonders what it was like watching someone you love disappear for four years — and still choosing to fight for them anyway.

He also had bacon and scrambled eggs on the other burners. He effortlessly worked them all until it was finally ready. Turning off the stove, he set the table and made up a plate for Merritt.
