James so desperately trying to be good and perfect. He’s the captain of all the sports teams, friendly with everyone, everyone ships him with The Girl Lily Evans, etc.
He’s tired and he just wants to be, and he’s so exhausted from being constantly terrified of making a mistake or not being sunshine and roses.
James meeting Regulus Black, and for the first time there’s someone that doesn’t expect him to be perfect and kind constantly and it’s such a breath of fresh air.
It’s so nice, that he ends up swinging too far in the wrong direction. He snaps, and gossips and sends dirty looks and refuses to be the kind boy he was.
It costs him everything in the end. Scholarships, grades, friends. Him and Sirius have a big blow out fight where James is completely in the wrong, and Regulus picks Sirius when he’s forced to choose a side.
James Potter, whose desperation to be perfect and fulfill expectations costs him everything when he can’t measure up and turns bitter.
