Hi! For the drabble prompt list, could I request Thorne/Cinder (without Winter spoilers, as I'm still reading it)? I loved the other fic you did with them! Maybe 18: āIāll be here as long as it takes," or 20: āSomethingās clearly wrong.ā
maybe both! god forgive me, i havenāt read cress in 20 years
Thereās a certain amount of discomfort and guilt that burrows itself deep in Cinderās stomach when she looks at Thorne. Itās that faraway, seeing nothing gaze and the silence that cloaks him. Blind. Heās blind, and itās all she can do to not scream at him to get over itĀ already.Ā
She knows itās not fair.Ā
And she canāt fix his eyes the same way she could fix his ship or Ikoās body, and sheās just not good with people. She should have been there with him. He would have for her.Ā
āIf you swallow that hard again, youāre going to wake the whole ship,ā Thorne tells her suddenly. She jumps. She doesnāt mean to.Ā
āIām not swallowing hard.ā
āYouāre not good at stealth either.ā
He gestures with his hand at - well, air, but she thinks itās meant to be at her leg. Heās not even close. So much for losing one sense heightening the others. Maybe thatās good in his case, it means heāll heal.Ā
Cinder needs Thorne to heal.Ā
He pats the floor next to him, in invitation. She hesitates when she doesnāt mean to, but the lopsided smile that crosses his mouth tells her that heās not offended. She wishes heād pretend to be, give her hell. Something. Anything.
But she comes to sit next to him, her knee against his. Itās strange how easy it is for them to lapse into intimacy. He doesnāt ever flinch from her body, and there are times where she doesnāt mind feeling his skin against hers: a hand, leaning against each other. Cinder doesnāt doĀ intimacy. She wants to, knows that thereās parts of her that are so starved for affection that she thinks her body would collapse into a hug, a kiss on the top of her head, a hand on her cheek.
But sheās a princess, and sheās Cinder, and a cyborg on top of it all.Ā
āSomethingās clearly wrong,ā she finally says. The words feel clunky in her mouth.
He waves a hand around his face.Ā āTell me about it.ā
Sheās so glad he canāt see, because she flinches. If she could blush, she would.Ā āNot your eyes.ā
āI canāt imagineĀ what else it would be,ā he mutters.Ā
Cinder leans her head against a wall.Ā āDid something happen out there, with Cress?ā
His lips part, but nothing comes out. Thatās not right. This is Thorne. He always has a quip, an excuse, something idiotic to say.Ā
āYouāve been avoiding her.ā
Cinder is oblivious at best when it comes to people, but even she can see the way that Cress stares at Thorne, like heās suddenly the sun and sheās been underground. It - it makes her uncomfortable, and she canāt really figure out why. Like Cress has found something that Cinder hasnāt, and she doesnāt like that. After everything, after what theyāve gone through together. Her first friend outside of Iko, her first ally. Heās faced everything with her with a joke and a smile and never onceĀ tried to walk away, and here comes this -
Well, thatās something to figure out later.Ā
āWhat do you think of me?ā
If she didnāt know better, sheād think Thorne was just this side of perceptive, but his voice is distracted, like heās only partially here with her.Ā
āYouāre annoying,ā Cinder says because itās the first thing that pops into her head.
He manages a weak grin at her, running his hand through messy blonde hair.Ā āTell me more.ā
āDumb. Brave. Loyal. Stubborn. Did I mention dumb?ā she asks.
āOnce or twice,ā he replies.Ā āDo you think - Stars, this is going to sound stupid - do you think I could be a hero?ā
Cinder blinks. Once, twice, doesnāt know what to say. What does that even mean?
Yeah, thatās not a helpful response. She can see it written on his face, the exasperation, the way his mood falls in the lines of his mouth. Sheās never seen him like this, carrying his pain out loud.Ā
He shifts away from her.Ā
āThorne, youāre exactly who youāre supposed to be,ā she starts, her words slow and careful.Ā āI donāt know if that makes you a hero anymore than it makes me one. Youāre a thief, a criminal, a fugitive, and youāre coming with me to Luna to fight a war thatās not even yours.ā
āItās yours.ā He shrugs.Ā āThatās good enough.ā
āThatās what I mean about being dumb, by the way.ā
āInsult me more, you know how I love it.ā And for the first time, he sounds like himself. She breathes a sigh of relief.Ā
āI want you to be you.āĀ
He turns to look at her, and she hates how handsome he is, how vulnerable and disheveled and desperate for some confirmation of who heās supposed to be. She wonders where this has come from, and why.Ā
Cinder shrugs, realizes that he canāt see it, and sighs.Ā āWe could all be better.ā
Her hand is on his shoulder before she can think about, and he twitches. Her fingers dig into the sleeve of his shirt, the heel of her hand coming up, down, up again in an awkward pat. His brow furrows.
āIām not good at this,ā she mutters.
āWould a hug help?ā She forces the words out in such a rapid rate, she practically screams it.Ā
His smile is the smile of an absolute cad, and itās charming all the same. Itās not like Kaiās, perfect and beautiful and poised. This is reckless in all corners. His arms open wide.
She regrets this already, but heās already folding her up in his embrace, and for a second, sheās confused. Sheās supposed to be comforting him, maybe an awkward pat on his head like the worldās worst mother. Instead, she finds her cheek pressed to his chest, her torso twisting uncomfortably. His heartbeat is a steady patter in her ear. Heās warm, his hold tight. His breath is a warm puff against the top of her head.Ā
Cinderās never really been held before. At least, she doesnāt remember if she has been. This is nice. Carefully, she wraps her arms around him.
āIāll be here as long as takes,ā she whispers.Ā āFor you to be better, if you want.ā
āIāll still be here.ā
