The Witches (1990) A young boy is told tales of witches by his grandma, when his parents are involved in an accident, they both move to England and stumble across just the people they worried about the most! Witches is a film adapted from the Roald Dahl book of the same name. You can tell from the film that it’s from his brilliant mind, with whimsical and magical moments mixed with some dark and at times quite scary scenes. It’s one of Dahl’s darker stories but works just as well. As it’s adapted from a book, you can also tell during the film, as some areas are very dialogue heavy, the brilliant performances of actors like Anjelica Huston, Jasen Fisher and Rowan Atkinson help bring the film to life and add some charm, but even still some areas feel slightly long, despite only being just off 90 mins runtime. Also, the film has Rowan Atkinson as I mentioned so how can you not love it! One of the reasons this is a great film is it’s nostalgia factor, a lot, and I mean a lot of people watched this as children and have very vivid memories of this, especially of the Grand High Witch 😐. It’s an inventive and fun film that manages to combine multiple elements in a way that only a Dahl book could. Overall, The Witches is a fun film, that is easy enough to watch, despite some long dialogue.
