#JackedKirby - Earthquake at The Baxter Building!!! 💥💥💥 There are few opening splash pages that I love more than the one that opens #Issue31 of the Fantastic Four (October of 1964). While the issue Itself isn’t so hot... this opening splash is PHENOMENAL!!! 💥💥💥 The issue opens up with the Fab 4 at home when an Earthquake rocks NYC. Jack decides to show them being tossed around the living room of the Baxter Building, with household items and furniture flying around the heroes as they try to use their powers to solve the problem!!! 💥💥💥 This issue sees the return of the Mole Man, and also the first appearance of Sue and Johnny’s dad Franklin Storm. But even with all that packed in it’s a pretty humdrum Issue... but this opening page is loaded with ACTION!!! 💥💥💥 On another note, check out the credit box on the opening page (pic 2) which taps Stan Lee as the “WRITER” and Jack Kirby as the “ILLUSTRATOR”. This ever changing title for Jack fluctuated regularly, with Issue 30 saying “Drawn By” And Issue 32 saying “ILLUSTRATIONS BY”. Kirby’s credits changed a lot... but Stan’s always stayed exactly the same. #JackedKirby - Never Hypnotize Doom!!!! 💥💥💥 #Issue39 of the Fantastic Four (published in June of 1965) is one of my all time favorite issues in the series ever. Not only does it guest star Dare Devil, it also features the Frightful Four as well. But the reason I love it so much is the return of Dr. Doom... fresh of his “victory” in FF Annual #2 over the team! In actuality he lost that battle... but REED hypnotized him to believe he won it. He is taking in a local magic show from a Latverian Magician when that truth is revealed to him... the spell is broken and he realizes he was defeated!!!! 💥💥💥 Pic 1 of this post shows an awesome background shot of Doom watching the magic show, with pic 2 of this post focusing on his awesome monogrammed THRONE!!! Gotta love the ornate “DD” Jack threw in for the monarch of Latveria!!! 💥💥💥 Pic 3 focuses on Doom’s rage when he is snapped out of the trance by such a insignificant magician. Jack does an amazing job of conveying the emotion of rage that is growing within Doom’s facial expressions even though it’s an iron mask! It’s incredible how you can almost feel the heat inside his mask growing as his eyes become more enraged!!! 💥💥💥 Pic 4 is my favorite sequence, a close up of the following page where the magician asks for compensation for the service he has provided Doom... all he gets is the backhand of Doom!!! Doom@even tells him to be GRATEFUL he doesn’t kill him simply for knowing Doom’s secret!!! Incredible.... vintage Doom is BACK! 💥💥💥 PS - I love this issue cause it has the worst Daredevil image ever created by Jack on the cover! It’s awful... but I love it. #JackedKirby - A Fan letter from a future Marvel Legend... 💥💥💥 Back in 1963 the Fantastic Four was chugging along at the head of the Marvel line of comics. The flagship title was being commandeered by Jack and Stan towards the top of the sales charts, but not everyone who was reading it was 100% satisfied with the finished product! Case in point a certain letter that was published in #Issue19 from October of 1963. 💥💥💥 The letter totally rips the Dream Team did their inconsistencies in storytelling and filler issues... and it takes particular exceptions with #Issue13 published in April of 1963. It came from the mind of a 16 year old Steve Gerber... the same Steve Gerber who would go onto create Howard the Duck for Marvel in 1973!!! 💥💥💥 The letter isn’t wrong... frankly he hits the nail on the head more then a few times. Even though my opinion of “The Run” (Jack & Stan’s 102 Issue run on the FF) is high there are some clunkers in there... and #Issue14 isn’t their best work! I love his ripping of the cover and all the blurbs... we get it, it’s all so important!!! (See pic 2) I am especially shocked at Gerber ripping the team up of Kirby and Ditko on this book... Ditko inked Kirby’s pencils. I think they are really good, and always like Ditko inking Kirby. See the third pic and make the decision for yourself!!! You also gotta love Stan’s snarky remarks in his response... typical Stanley Lieber laying it on thick!!!! 💥💥💥 The irony here is that when Gerber would eventually get into a legal battle with Marvel over the rights to the character Kirby would step up to help him. They collaborated on a few issues of Destroyer Duck to raise money for Gerber’s “Defense Fund” in battling Marvel!!!
