Day 60/100: The Grave Accent ( ` ). A diacritical mark in many written languages, the grave accent first appeared in the polytonic orthography of Ancient Greek to mark a lower pitch than the high pitch of the acute accent. In modern practice, it replaces an acute accent in the last syllable of a word when that word is followed immediately by another word. The grave and circumflex have been replaced with an acute accent in the modern monotonic orthography. The accent mark was called βαρεῖα, the feminine form of the adjective βαρύς (barús), meaning "heavy" or "low in pitch". This was calqued (loan-translated) into Latin as gravis, which then became the English word grave. The grave accent marks the stressed vowels of words in Maltese, Catalan, and Italian. I've gone a bit psychedelic for this one: [An arrangement of grave accents to make a geometric flower on a marbled background] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #100days #the100dayproject #gm100dayproject #punctuation #thepunctuationproject #punctuationmarks #punctuationdesign #punctuationlibrary #graveaccent #grave #ancientgreek #latin #language #pronunciation #vowels #vowelaccents #punctuationrules
Day 43/100: "Because". Just...because. It looks a lot like a face but it's a simple shorthand for 'because'. I like it. Day 36/100: Nuqtā. Hindi-Urdu from the Arabic nuqta "dot," or "period", also spelled Nuktā, is a diacritic mark introduced in Devanāgari (and some other Indian scripts) used to represent sounds from other languages which do not have a native character. It takes the form of a dot placed below a character. Also, in the Urdu script, there are some letters in Urdu that share the same basic shape but differ in the placement of dots(s) or nuqta(s). I think this mark is very pretty & love the various formations of dots that form the letters. This project really is an education! Day 32/100: The Acclamation Point. In 1966, French writer Hervé Bazin proposed six new punctuation marks, including this one. He described the Acclamation Point as “the stylistic representation of those two little flags that float above the tour bus when a president comes to town.” How fabulous! #100daysofthepunctuationproject #100days #the100dayproject #gm100dayproject #punctuationmarks #punctuationpoints #thepunctuationproject #punctuation #theacclamationpoint #acclamationpoint #exclamation #exclamationmarks #hervebazin #hervébazin #stylisticpunctuation #grammarstyle #grammermarks #watercolour #watercolourpainting

Day 17/100: The 'commercial at' symbol that was a bit unloved prior to email. Now it's in constant use everyday around the world, and in languages other than English it has some pretty cool & clever names: In DUTCH - "apestaart" meaning 'monkey's tail'. In ITALIAN - "chiocciola" meaning 'snail' In NORWEGIAN - "kroellalfa" meaning curled 'a'. In FINLAND - "miukumauku" because it looks like a sleeping cat. In DENMARK - "snabel-a", with snabel meaning the trunk of an elephant. And so many more. Where you @? Day 15/100: The Semicolon; one of my favourites. Some writers say you should never use them but I find comfort in their presence. And it stops me comma-splicing... sometimes. (I question my understanding of punctuation & grammar ALL the time, but at least there's no judgement here; it's all about the aesthetics.) Day 7/100: A cacophony of commas. Commas are like rabbits, breeding in fields of text. They sneak in, constant & insidious. I've been accused of 'comma splicing' in the past but I think it's just a vicious rumour. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, [Pencil on paper] #the100dayproject #100days #100daysofthepunctuationproject #gm100dayproject #thepunctuationproject #punctuation #punctuationmarks #comma #commas #commasplice #pencil #pencilmarks #pencilonpaper #punctuationdesign #punctuationpoints
