The Magician’s Land by Lev Grossman . I should have finished this book last year, wrapping up 2018 with the three books in this series. My wife and I were listening to it on audiobook as we returned from a roadtrip up to Maine over Christmas, and making good progress on it. Unfortunately, as we were returning, just short 2 hours from home, we were hit by another vehicle while driving along the New Jersey Turnpike causing our car to flip onto its roof. As you’d imagine, this put a pin in listening to the book but this past weekend we were finally able to finish it. Strangely, as we resumed listening, skipping it back a moment to a section we both remembered, it appeared that our accident happened at a point in the novel where Quentin, the protagonist, is completing a piece of big magic, “Big surges of power were flowing through the room. [...] Huge tranches and structures of magic that so far she’d only ever seen in isolation were colliding and interacting like weather systems. The intensity doubled and redoubled itself. Without warning the room juddered and dropped, leaving them in free fall for an instant—if it had been an airplane the oxygen masks would have come down. Quentin’s voice sounded artificially deep, and he’d started to tremble with the effort of keeping everything together.” It was a surreal moment hearing that section again then realising we hadn’t heard anything after that because that was the moment we had crashed, car shuddering from the impact and spinning on its roof, as literature and real life collided. I don’t know what point I’m trying to make here, besides the fact that I enjoyed the book.
