I gave you a note today.

It passed

from one trembling hand

to the other.

For a moment,

its weight

left mine

for yours.

Our hands touched.

You fumbled,

and it slipped

onto the counter

before finding its place

between your fingers.

I wondered

what you thought

in that moment—

a grown man

folding paper

just to say

what his voice

couldn't.

Perhaps

I seemed childish.

But it wasn't

for what you probably thought.

Maybe even hoped.

You said,

"Have a good one."

I answered,

"You too."

Without ever

finding the courage

to look you

in the eyes.

Later,

you unfolded

the memories

I had carried

like a secret.

The morning

you encouraged me

to stand before strangers

and read

the pages

of my book.

How you became

the reason

I kept writing

when most days

I didn't want

to exist.

How you drew me

from the safety

of my own walls,

just long enough

to feel warmth—

then again,

and again,

until returning

became a habit.

You never knew

any of this.

I'm not sure

why today

became the day.

Maybe surgery

has a strange way

of reminding us

not to leave

gratitude

unsaid.

You may not

see me

for a little while.

But I wanted

to thank you

in the strangest way

I knew how—

sealed

with the drawing

of a tree,

fitting

for your name,

little Plum.
