From my perspective;

The loops are buying time. Johan needed time, as his body was destablized and he could barely hold himself together. He first had to code a location that had enough magic/code already within it to keep himself and henry stable, that being the studio and his apartment above it. He recognized that Henry had the ability to reset to specific points, though he needs an energy source and a medium, that being Johan. Johan did not realize that he too also has the ability to create resets, but he can only go back to specific points, rather than henry’s ability to effect what happened in the time from point a to point b and back to point a. 

Johan = resetting time without changing what happened in the middle; limited by memory henry = going through the ‘menu’ and able to go to specific points to change them, then can return to the past after the changes have been made; limited by time
