Liking Leon and Ada individually as characters but not shipping them is sometimes so crazy. But you see... their relationship is about the angst. To me. The could-have-beens and the never-wills. It's about a man who cares too much and a woman who cares too little. It's about never really knowing someone at all. It's about connecting during the worst time of your life but realizing that connection isn't going to last because you're fundamentally different people with fundamentally different goals. It's about longing that will never be satisfied so you learn to let it go. It's about going separate ways before anything really begins because you both know it won't last. It's about choosing something else over the other (a victim to save, a paycheck to collect). It's about tragedy.
