Heads up, Texas vagina-havers! Repost from @plancpills • Yes, even in Texas! Ending an early pregnancy doesn’t have to mean going to a clinic or doctor. Tens of thousands of people all across the US are going online and finding what they need to safely self-manage an abortion, at home. @plancpills is a nonprofit public health and equity campaign that is working hard to ensure widespread education and access to abortion pills. This safe and effective method for self-managed abortion has been around for 30 years, and it belongs directly in the hands of the people who need it. So why don’t people know it’s an option? You guessed it: politics. In states like Texas, where legislators restrict abortion access, punish providers and now even target the people who help others gain access to abortion, it’s even more essential that people know about this safe, at-home abortion option. Together we can spread the word about the online availability of abortion pills, shipped right to your home with or without telehealth support. @plancpills created a resource called The Plan C Guide to Pills. It’s is an easy-to-use, nationwide directory that provides information on resources available by state for self-managed abortion: sources of pills (including price and ship times), hotlines for medical and legal support, and more. ✨ If you need abortion pills or want to learn more, visit plancpills.org/guide ✨ Spread the word! I'm tying in this article with the theme of the 'good life'. Texas has recently tightened its restrictions on abortion clinics and this has resulted in a significantly smaller number of legal clinics strewn around the second biggest state in the U.S by area.
On one hand, I strongly agree that the practices of clinics regardless of its service should be implemented with standards that provide safety and responsibility to the public and the city. All the more in this case as childbirth is a delicate situation facing mother and child.
On the other hand, 13 more abortion clinics will be closed, leaving Texas - a state with the second largest area and second largest population of women in reproductive age with only 7 legal clinics to choose from. The costs of maintaining these facilities in line with Texan requirements would mean that a lot of women may not afford to have an abortion. It could unfortunately lead to the rise in unsanitary, obsolete methods of abortion that could do more even more harm. This notion was particularly highlighted during the House debate as several representatives held wire hangers, representing the brutal abortion methods that would return if more clinics were out of business.
