when do Lent lectures start? (sorry that's a bit of a silly question but I'm a fresher and still a bit confused :p)
So week 1 of Lent Term begins on the 18th January (a Thursday), so lectures will begin in that week (obviously they won’t all start on the Thursday, but that’s the first day). A few modules will have their first lecture between Monday 15th and Wednesday 17th if they have a lot of content to cover, but I think that that’s very rare, and you’ll have been told if that applies to you. If in doubt, check your online timetable, as that should have the correct information for your courses.
Hi there!! I'm starting Cambridge this term as a fresher and I'm incredibly confused by the weeks system and don't know who to ask. We move in on Sept 30th... so when does 'Week 1' start? Tuesday 3rd or Thursday 5th? And how many official weeks are there? As in, I know it's an essay a week and there's week 5 blues but i'm just very confused. Thank you for your time xx
Honestly very fair anon, it’s a crazy system. So, you generally move in the weekend before the start of term itself. The website with the term dates always lists the start of Full Term as Tuesday, for some reason... but for most purposes in Cambridge we refer to Week 1 as beginning on Thursday 5th, Week 2 on Thursday 12th, and so on. Although in reality you always end up with appointments/meetings earlier in the week than Thursday. Yes, it’s complicated, but for the minute you just need to turn up on the 30th, go where you’re asked to be, and the whole calendar system will start making more sense as you go along!
when does lent term start? I dont understand the difference between full term and term dates?? When should undergraduates(1st years) arrive?
Okay, so term dates and full term are essentially the same thing - they’re the days where you’ll be having lectures, going to supervisions and just generally be expected to be in Cam (although ofc you can leave for a weekend to visit home etc). Residency period refers to the dates when you can stay in college accommodation - it usually begins one week before term starts and ends one week later, and you can arrive/leave at any time you want.
Term dates for 2017-2018 are HERE. Residency periods vary based on colleges, but most people tend to arrive the Saturday/Sunday before term starts and leave the Saturday/Sunday after it ends.
First years this year are arriving on Saturday 30th September!
Hey!! I made my offer this week so I'm over the moon about arriving this October. However I'm a bit useless when it comes to documents/forms/any kind of info that's being crammed at me on the Internet and I can't find a straight answer about Freshers Week: is Freshers week 1st October onwards? Or is that when term officially starts? Or are they the same thing? I'm sure that's a very obvious question, but I get v. anxious about things like dates and scheduling etc, I always seem to mess up!x
Hahaha, that’s fair enough! Freshers week this year is Saturday, 30th of September onwards, and term officially starts on Tuesday, 3rd October. Lectures will start on the 5th of October!

Got my start dates!
Ok so my Welcome Week (freshers) at Bangor University begins on September 18th! and then classes begin the next week on the 25th!
I’m really looking forward to getting down there and getting stuck in, I already kind of know which societies (clubs) I’d like to join and i’m looking forward to being much more active and just generally being a bit more busy, the open uni get’s kinda boring and also lonely because it’s just you alone in your room so i’m looking forward to being around people and attending actual classes again.
Hope I don’t sleep in.
Ok! more to come as and when there’s anything to tell!
Are overseas students eligible for hardship funds? I can reconcile Sarah saying that she got one.... I just can't remember whether she said that we could. Also in terms of Full term: Can we just stay for the Full term and leave as soon as the full term ends to go back home for the holidays?
Eek, sorry - don’t know about the hardship funds for internationals! Can any helpful experts chip in?
To answer your second question, yeah, you could, provided you didn’t sign out at any point during full term for x number of days (in which case you’d need to stay in college for x days after the end of full term to have ‘kept term’). Buuuuut that being said, term generally ends on a Thursday, and it’s not unheard of for there to be supervisions held on the Thursday/Friday, so I’d advise hanging around until the weekend if you can. The end of full term is also one of the more fun times to be at Cam - the last couple of days are really chill before most people move out on the Saturday/Sunday!
ok so i'm really confused about my school
I'm technically doing my masters backwards because I started in January rather than September, so the classes I just took were my term 1, but for the rest of the class it was their term 2, and so now they're all done with classes and just have their dissertations to work on. so literally, I have no idea when my next set of classes are going to be. I've been thinking, if I have to wait until the next intake comes, that's gunna be in September...which would mean I've got like 3 months where I can chill... :O I don't want to get my hopes up cos this seems way too optimistic, if this is the case I am going on holiday NOW. (by now I mean when I finish my cw) - that will be bliss. I want to be on the beach so badly. if this isn't how it is though, im just not being told about classes at all. I really hope im not just skipping loads of them that im supposed to be in...haven't even been given the option of picking my modules yes, its so weird. also, the last uni I went to was a weird private place and it was only 2 years so the term times were always weird there, so I don't even know what its supposed to be like. oh well. I've got extension deadlines to meet for now and then if im lucky I am OUTTA HERE
