I read Imbalance a long time ago but I'm gonna be arrogant and say I don't need to reread it before I make this post (I don't want to reread, sorry, it wasn't that good. FEH looks like our saviour when compared to Yang and her characterisation is actually good, which is more than Yang gave us. But a good story is a good story and Imbalance was meh to me. Also, I wonder if Twitter powerscaling has gotten to me; but I'm actually approaching it from the perspective of writing and not video games so I can be forgiven).
I hated that all Kyoshi Warriors could qi-block now. Idk, it was bizzare. And enough time has passed, I have considered that it might be my not wanting to see a change but nope. It just doesn't do it for me. Although I believe someone who knows how to write action might be able to execute it properly (to be honest, all the ATLA media I've consumed other than the cartoon itself has been BAD™ when it came to action... That includes the new Aang movie too).
So, getting it out of the way that a better writer could've written better fight sequences for Imbalance—the fact that remained: it was established at the end of the cartoon that Ty Lee taught the Kyoshi Warriors qi-blocking in prison.
Now I'm left wondering why Mai didn't bother learning it from her. (Other than the obvious reason that they wanted them both to have varied skill-sets). Mai is delighted when Ty Lee qi-blocks Katara. And while I peg her as someone who doesn't beat herself over not being the best (like Azula and to a lesser extent Zuko) (note: Azula and Ty Lee are both better fighters than her and she seems to accept it) I really do wonder why she wouldn't ask Ty Lee to teach her...
Would it be at that point in time she and Ty Lee didn't feel safe with each other?
I wonder if Ty Lee would've been reluctant to teach her, and if so, Mai would instinctively know that. I can imagine Ty Lee being apprehensive—but I can also imagine her being equally enthusiastic about teaching. Or maybe that was limited to aura reading and walking on your hands and not qi-blocking? But I'm not sure, I don't have a good grasp on Ty Lee.

(Also note that Azula was seen carrying Mai's knives in TDoBS; Bryke have gone on record saying Azula picked Mai and Ty Lee because she wanted to pick their skill-sets too. It'd also be interesting to know why Azula wouldn't want to learn qi-blocking. After all, it's what makes Ty Lee so terrifying).
(Also, if it's because Azula has a superiority complex about asking Ty Lee to teach her... I think if she really wanted it she'd have found a way to make it sound like the honour was all Ty Lee's).
EDIT: it makes sense for Mai to not learn it because she's a ranged fighter and qi-blocking requires you to get up and close to the enemy. Not only is it a low reward, high risk skill it one doesn't have Ty Lee's acrobatics, I can also see Mai in general being uncomfortable with the idea of getting that close to people she's fighting.
They were gonna give Zuko the hair from GLY (henceforth refered to as the dark era of) comics. We avoided disaster so narrowly and weren't even aware of it! Those comics are a curse that never stop haunting us huh.

Katara was originally going to pregnant. I'm so fucking glad they scrapped it. I'm so tired of the ongoing obssession with pregnancy everywhere. I'm also glad they chose a design for her where she looks like a grown woman (because some of these are not that).

I think the reason a lot of people like to think Azula wouldn't have hurt Mai is because if we think she would have, it makes Zuko look really really bad for leaving Mai behind in Boiling Rock. I'd rather believe Azula wouldn't have hurt Mai. Otherwise I can't ship maiko. It's a pretty thing and I don't like Zuko neglecting Mai to that extent.
This is a really interesting point anon, and I think this is a pretty common sentiment! I know there’s a lot of people that don’t like this or the fact that we never see Zuko go back for her.
However, I actually think that that is what makes Mai’s actions such an incredible sacrifice.
Even if people don’t think Azula would’ve killed Mai personally, we know that Zuko is viewed as a traitor in the Fire Nation, and any action Mai takes to help him is also an act of treason. Even if Azula wouldn’t have killed Mai personally, there is no debate that what Mai did was an incredible act.
She acts completely of her own accord. She’s capable, clever, and she is well versed in how Azula behaves. Zuko doesn’t ask it of her, and even takes active measures to try and keep her out of the fight by closing her in the cell. All of the actions she takes to save Zuko are done with the understanding that there is no escape. Mai gives her life willingly so that he can get away.
They both know this. I actually think the fact that Zuko doesn’t try and go back possibly shows that he believes Azula will not be merciful to Mai. It’s also clear that there is no time, and to squander the chance Mai gave to them would be a disservice to her.
We see a lot sacrifices made throughout the entire show: Kya gives her life for Katara, Ursa flees into exile for Zuko, Iroh is captured by the Fire Nation so Katara and Aang can get away, Yue gives her life for the moon spirit, Zuko jumps in to redirect the lightning for Katara, and Aang risks everything to defeat Ozai. As far as I know, we don’t fault anyone else in the show for accepting a sacrifice that was lovingly and willingly given.
A lot of people argue that Mai’s actions are narratively unearned. However in my opinion, in a show that is all about love, redemption, and working against evil to form a better world, I think Mai’s sacrifice fits right in. One of the only things the show really tells us about her is that she cares for Zuko and wants to be in a relationship with him.
It shouldn’t negatively reflect on Zuko, it should reflect positively on who Mai is as a character. It should show that even though she does not understand why he’s doing what he is, she loves him and trusts his character enough to risk her life for it. I think it’s actually a really beautiful testament to Maiko as a couple.
The back half of book 3 was so rushed even more important things like Zuko's redemption and Aang's dilemma about Ozai were not given proper due but maiko shippers would die before they acknowledge that it was bad writing. But I guess the gaps in maiko's writing serves the purpose of painting her as this long suffering never-going-to-be-as-important-to-zuko-as-some-other-things isn't-she-so-great-to-still-want-to-be-with-him soap opera heroine just fine.
