Caldera cycle
Tengger caldera in Indonesia does a wonderful job of illustrating the way large volcanic systems evolve. In the distance in this photo you see the wall of a caldera, formed during a huge eruption that emptied the magma camber below, causing the volcano to collapse in on itself.
The magma supply at depth in the Earth typically doesn’t care whether a big eruption takes place; it doesn’t shut off just because a big eruption takes place at the surface. This continued magma supply will rejuvenate the volcanic system, causing the growth of new cones in same location.
The cone in the foreground is Mount Bromo, which has been active in the past several years, including releasing plumes of volcanic gas during 2014.
