DYLAN GUITARIST SAGA UNFOLDING: Four different guitarists have played in Bob Dylan’s band since mid-June, when Doug Lancio vanished and was replaced, without a word, by jazz guitarist extraordinaire Julian Lage. Not long after Lage appeared, second guitarist Bob Britt quit and was not replaced. And when Lage had his own gigs to attend to, Joel Paterson was on stage with Dylan, per Jambase.

Dylan’s camp has been mum. Lancio has been mum. Lage has been mum. Britt has said little more than he quit. And Paterson has been mum.

Dylan plays Oklahoma July 2. With whom, no one’ll know until showtime.

GRATEFUL EXHIBITION: Forever Grateful, an exhibit featuring more than 400 pieces of Grateful Dead memorabilia, will run at San Francisco’s Haight Street Art Center from July 3 to Sept. 20, radio station WDRV reports.

BUDDY GUY’S 90th SET: Eric Clapton, Gary Clark Jr., John Mayer, Robert Cray, Bobby Rush and Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi are among the artists who’ll play alongside Buddy Guy as he celebrates his 90th birthday with an Oct. 1 concert at Radio City Music Hall.

VILLAGE PEOPLE’S VICTOR WILLIS DIES AT 74: Victor Willis, lead singer for the Village People, died June 30 at 74 following “a short but aggressive illness,” the band said.

Like a Road: Jerry Garcia Street Bound to Cover a Little More Ground in San Francisco’s Excelsior District

- Name change unveiling scheduled for Aug. 2

There’s somethin’ shakin’ on Harrington Street in San Francisco, a portion of which will be renamed in honor of Jerry Garcia.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on April 22 approved the change to Jerry Garcia Street, marking the section of the road where the late Grateful Dead guitarist lived as a child, Jambase reports.

Jerry Garcia Street will be unveiled Aug. 2, Jerry Day in San Francisco, and will also commemorate 60 years since the Dead’s formation, 30 years since Garcia’s death and the “music, joy and inspiration (his memory brings) to the current residents of the Excelsior (District) and San Francisco,” per the board’s resolution.

“By uniting the diverse communities of San Francisco through Garcia’s music, we are creating something extraordinary for Jerry’s childhood neighborhood, the Excelsior District, McLaren Park and the city and county of San Francisco,” Jerry Day founder Tom Murphy said.

John Mayer on Dead & Company: “We’re Gonna Play Shows”

Dead & Company have gone on their Final Tour.

But, to hear John Mayer tell it, the band has not yet played its final gig.

“We will play (more) shows,” said the guitarist, who recently performed “They Love Each Other” at the Crossroads Guitar Festival.

The comments, carried by Jambase, echo previous statements from Mickey Hart about Dead & Company’s future. Mayer isn’t on the bill for Hart & Weir’s 2024 Dead Ahead gigs in Mexico & he says taking the group “on the road is kind of an interesting question.” But it will likely be onstage somewhere, sometime.

“I have to believe that we love this music so much we’re gonna play shows,” Mayer said. “We just are trying to figure out what that looks like for the future.”

Quarter Notes: Blurbs & Briefs from Sound Bites

ALPINE VALLEY SOLD: Alpine Valley, the East Troy, Wisc., venue where Stevie Ray Vaughan played his final gig in 1990, has been sold to Florida-based Consolidated-Tomoka Land Co., Jambase reports.

The venue, leased to Live Nation, is slated to host Farm Aid Sept. 21.

BLOW THIS: A trumpet designed and played by Miles Davis is expected to fetch between $70,000 and $100,000 when it is auctioned Oct. 29 in New York, Rolling Stone reports.

“Handling the blue Moon and Stars horn is, for jazz lovers, like handling a holy relic,” musician Keyon Harrold said in a statement. “The design is flawless, and the gold engravings just beautiful.”

ANOTHER WALTZ: Warren Haynes, Lukas Nelson, Jamey Johnson, Don Was and John Medeski are among the artists participating in a Robbie Robertson-sanctioned tribute to the Band.

The Last Waltz Tour 2019: A Celebration of The Band’s Historic Farewell Concert will tour in November, continuing a series of shows that began in 2016.

Robertson, who is not slated to perform, said in a statement he is “proud to be a part of this ongoing and wonderful tradition.” Dates and ticketing info here.
