A few months ago I was approached by Far Leaves Tea of Berkeley, California via Instagram about partnering up for a podcast. Being that it was my first time contacted by a business I was truely excited about how far this podcast had come and didn't hesitate to accept the request. I then hurriedly left my apartment to buy a sticker and give myself a pat on the back. A milestone had been reached! Achievement Unlocked!

The amicable Peter Christy and his wife run the blossoming business having started it only several years prior. And if Peter’s charisma is evident of his character it is no question that Berkeley has a true gem of a business within it. Opening themselves up to group events and tastings the Far Leaves team use their open and breath easy atmosphere to educate the masses on how to enjoy a brew. During the podcast we dive right into Peter’s humble beginnings and Asian travels, seeing where his inspiration first took root. This leads us into some great discussion and insight surrounding the range of customers Peter sees walk through his door. We later bridge into puer, business altruism, gong fu, and bit of buddhism. It’s a loaded podcast this week folks so bring your teapots close and your cups even closer.

It’s the World Tea Podcast @ The World Tea Expo!

A beautiful Friday it is today! More so because I am currently tea drunk off of Jalam Teas’ Pulang Puerh (9 steeps total) and Obubu Kyoto’s Kabuse Sencha (serious diggin' the veggie vibes).

But of course we have another podcast, and on a topic my friend Jason Walker of Walker Tea Review was very accurate in describing: The Rise of the Machines. For you see, during this year’s World Tea Expo there were an abundance of new technologies being deployed. Technologies which were learning. Technologies which are growing ever more capable. Technologies which will one day destroy……..your ever preconception. 

   If you are of the type to believe in the old-fashioned, I implore you to reconsider. The landscape is being rewritten, new hardware is being installed, and you’re going to need to upgrade. This isn't intended to shock the current system, no, but changes are coming. Tradition will always sell; it’s a secure niche. But not everyone is willing to give the time to sit down and brew with a gaiwan or kyuusu

Myself, well I adore my tea-ware. I'm actively collecting. Yet I realise the need for these machines. We are a community, us tea drinkers. A community that flourishes with every new member. And the simple fact is: these new mechanical devices will attract more people.

Consider the impact of the Keurig. Now imagine the potential of the BKON. Created by the Vastardis brothers (Tardis……can the BKON time travel?) Dean and Lou, the BKON de-constructs brewing into pure infusing science. A process titled Reverse Atmospheric Infusion (RAIN) is the engine which drives the BKON to delivering a satisfying cup. And at the Expo we were fortunate enough to take it for a test-drive.

It’s the World Tea Podcast @ the World Tea Expo! 

It’s a short one to start your week folks! I managed to get a quick interview with Noli from Sugimoto America prior to the Expo closing. Luckily for me, Noli not only had a Houjicha Latte at the ready, but he also had quite the display of Japanese Senchas. 

Prior to the Expo opening I was able to taste some of Sugimoto America’s rarest teas. The Temomi Shincha (Hand-rolled first harvest tea) was of particular bliss, and has already sold out! I highly recommend visiting their website and looking at the 2014 Spring inventory.

If you want to learn more about Japanese tea production, you’ll be wanting to listen in. The intricacies still surprise me, and I've lived on a Japanese Tea Farm! You can bet you’ll be cherishing your teas even more when you discover how deep the rabbit hole goes!
