I think Mallory is funny because when writing we sometimes forget what physically makes up a character.
I’ve been in WORK MODE all day...I originally came to the basement for a workout, then the hot water tank & the plumber got in the way. I sat at my desk, put on some Academy lessons in the background & for my workflow going! My mind is so full it’s about to explode...I totally have so much to say but my mind is moving faster than my lips or fingers can go... #adultadd #brainstorming #personaldevelopment What’s next...I need a little brain downtime! Yep, I can take in a ton of information but I need to process & compartmentalize what I’ve learned. Then I can share it with you... #teachit #shareyouranswer #learnersareearners #dothework

Read Resilience, Be Resilient
This book brings up difficult and possible new concepts, depending on the reader, that make the reader re-think their own attitudes and abilities as well as how the themes of this book connect with their own life. These themes include racism, divorce, religion, North verse South attitudes and contrasting ways of life, and the struggles of a young girl growing up with all of these foreign but heavy experiences every day.
Jacqueline Woodson captures the entire attitude of this book, regardless of the difficult concepts addressed, in a single verse: “Somewhere in my brain/ each laugh, tear and lullaby/ becomes memory.” (Woodson 20). In this verse, it sounds as if Jackie is remembering and embracing each moment no matter how controversial (religion), current (racism), or personal (family divorce and separation) the time in her life gets. The attitude she forms from these experiences is one of resilience because she recognizes that each concept makes up a piece of her and shapes her. Woodson creates a resilient, strong, and empowered young girl that faces many hardships and joys, which is captured through the strength of Jackie, which impacts and inspires readers to change their attitude about the things going on in their own life. If they see one person being able to endure all the experiences (good and bad) like those that Jackie had, then so can they. Jackie is a sense of inspiration and is a fresh figurehead of empowerment for young readers, especially young girls.
As teachers, we want to expose students to various ideas so that they can develop well-rounded thinking and by suggesting books like Brown Girl Dreaming we are contributing to their learning of different religions, cultures, and time periods. This book centers mostly on racism, religion, and divorce, which are three large and extremely prevalent topics in today's society, which makes this book very relatable and current regardless of when it was written and the time period it is written in.
