do you ever make something so stpuid that its unfunny, but its so unfunny that it kind of loops around to being funny again
The numbers that built up TDSR! pt 1
I don't know what possessed me to do this but here we are.
A lot of people keep saying we paid BitBot almost 1.5 million dollars for a comic majority of the community does not see fit of the Legacy of Kain writing quality. ~~In my opinion~~
We did not pay $1.5 mill for the book ALONE. We paid $1.5 mill for the book AND officially licensed merchandise. We got the Reaver replicas, masks, banners, maps, shirts, hats, hoodies, music, etc. No one can attest to the quality of these products until they finally get shipped out and are in our hands. Until then I will assume they are of decent quality.
The whole point of this series of posts is I'm going to break down the cost of each portioned earned, look up some rough estimates as to how much it will cost to manufacture, and see how it all sizes up. But first we need to see what we're working with.
Part: | 1 | - | 2 |
Now lets get on with it
WAIT I just thought of something....Elaleth is a vampire right? Aaand she wants her dead lover Mathais to be rasied [or rather re-raised] - as a vampire right? And before Kain, vampires were created from the living. So around maybe the Blood Omen 2 era Vorador is either re-raised by Kain or someone else, but the knowledge on how to raise the dead as vampires is feasibly there. And Vorador was alredy a [dead] vampire during this. Otherwise Kain learned it sometime before he raised his lieutenants - from the dead. The very much like 500 years DEAD.
SO WHY does Elaleth even need Janos's heart?? Why isn't she pestering the absolute shit out of Kain or Vorador for their secrets?
Or as she wanted her lover - who is dead - to be raised from the dead why wasn't she pestering Mortanius? Mortanius who is the Guardian of DEATH? Like surely all the people of Nosgoth know who all the Pillar Guardians are as I assume they are revered, so she would know who does what. Moebius has like no need to even be relevant to her.
Also, barring her gaining any knowledge from Kain/Vorador, Mortanius is the obvious option to ask as death is his domain. And as she's supposedly seen all of the relevant timeline she would have been able to find out that Mortanius was the one that made Kain. [with the Heart of Darkness but still. There should be steps to get there ya know]
...What a mess all this is....there really seems to be so many better writing options that just weren't explored. Like I get it, the TDSR team surely had page limits, time limits, staffing limits, and whatever else was going on but seriously. The Dead Shall Rise is just so....underwhelmingly made.
Elaleth had started with a pretty decent character design where she could have taken all her problems into her own hands and fought to raise her love herself instead of having to rely solely on the men in the series to light her path for her. Maybe she could have been the one to pioneer the ability to raise the dead vampires herself! She could have taught Kain and thats where he coukd have gotten the idea himself to raise the Sarafan. Then she would have just needed a way to go back in time to get her love re-raised - but then TDSR wouldn't have been about Raziel now, would it?
there is a boy sitting on the dining table.
he’s very faint, but he’s there. and he’s sitting on top of the dining table, with his legs criss-crossed and everything. he’s leaned back on one palm, with his other very faint arm risen and reaching for the light fixture hanging from the ceiling.
shouto stares. and then, he says, “um, hello?”
or; shouto’s ghost acquired a new friend by the name of hanta.

Laughter died in her lungs as she felt Bellamy go stiff beneath her. It was only in that moment that Clarke realized the intimacy of their position, when his body froze like the first frost of winter under which she could still feel the faint tremble of life. Clarke had been so focused on freeing her restrained legs that her mind had not processed the sharp ridges of the boy beneath her. Then the absurdity of it all - their duel, her fall - had overwhelmed everything else. But now Clarke could feel everything. The buttons of his shirt pressing against her chest. His kneecaps digging into her shins. And other places which she tried not to think about.

On Fans, Lore, and Generative AI
A significant amount of new item descriptions were written for Defiance Remastered, in addition to an in-game encyclopedia covering everything from the War of the Ancients to the corruption of the Pillars and beyond. Raina and Aevum (see note in comments) utilized decades of research -- chronicled on the long standing Legacy of Kain fansites, which they also maintain -- and behind the scenes content, including new concept art and lost levels inaccessible until now, to bring this game to life on a level fans never expected.
Reading the encyclopedia for the first time brought me to tears. Here is a rich trove of lore, a labor of love, beautifully written and meticulously fact checked. Think of all the extra time, effort, and budget that was dedicated to making this perfect. Even the item descriptions, written from the point of view of Raziel and Kain respectively, perfectly capture the cadence and personality of these legendary characters. If only Raina could have secured Simon Templeman and Michael Bell to voice them!
Ascendance, the dubiously canonical sixth entry in Kain's legacy, independently developed by BitBot via their studio FreakZone Games, also contains an extra helping of lore adjacent side-content in the form of collectables called codices.
BitBot styles themselves a company by fans, for fans. They may have a track record of fumbling minor details, such as coloring Lt Raziel's cloak brown instead of red in every single panel of TDSR, but surely their undeniable passion for Legacy of Kain will shine just as brightly as Raina's team! Surely BitBot put some effort into Ascendance... right?
Let's talk about chatgpt.
So I haven't seen any gameplay for Ascendance yet but I have been reading the steam reviews out of morbid curiosity.
Hmm.
