Kain has always been tough for me to get a grip on, but I feel like I've come to understand him in a way that makes him interesting for me specifically to write about. I'm not sure how well this holds up. I haven't considered what Denis Dyack had in mind when he wrote him because I have no respect for a man who a man who embraces LLMs and continues to suckle at the withered teat of Gamer Gate in 2026. Ahem. Back on topic...
I see Kain as a man who has felt like a square peg in a round hole for his entire life. From childhood, he was aware that something was Not Right. He did not feel things his peers felt, he had powerful impulses he needed to repress. The easiest way for him to deal with this was to tell himself that at least some of the things he felt were normal and others were just better at masking them him, playing a game he needed to learn. He always resented being roped into games he didn't consent to play.
Being born into nobility, Kain's parental guardians were quite strict with him. More strict than they were with his older brothers. They had to be, because there was something Not Right inside of Kain. This means that Kain was brought up with the idea that there is a Certain Way of doing things in life. He never questioned whether these ways were right or wrong. It's Just The Way Things Are Done. He didn't always like it, but these rules gave him direction and helped combat the strange urges he had been cursed with.
Learning the truth hurt. He realized he had been dragged into another game without his consent. No matter how well he learned the rules, no matter how well he played his father's game, none of that mattered because the entire time he had been trapped in an even greater game without realizing. At least this time he had the power to say no.
But even that wasn't enough. The game didn't end just because he refused to act. He could scream, he could rage, he could flip over the board, but the game continued at his expense.
After a while it gets hard to tell what part of him is even real. How much of him is Nupraptor's corruption? How much of him is destiny's pawn? Is anything real? Maybe by Soul Reaver he's accepted that he'll never know, that it's better for everyone, himself included, to play by the rules -- at least until he knew how to break them.
