January 22nd: Education.
Okay so this may turn out being a little bit of a rant.
It seems to be that the days I skip college are the only days that I can feel even remotely okay.
And that is so fucked up it makes me angry.
I have hated being in education since I was 15 years old, which was, not at all coincidentally, when I started studying for my GCSEs. The amount of stress put on students these days is ridiculous. I get up at 6am every morning to be at college for 9am, and get back home at half past 5 every evening-I dedicate 10 hours of my day at least 4 times a week to something that makes me miserable. I made the dedication to go to a college that was a fifteen minute walk and an hour and a half bus journey away so that I could get the best education possible so I could do something meaningful with my life by getting onto whatever course I wanted at a good university. But that isn't how things turned out.
I detest college with every fibre of my being.
My teachers are dreadful; one of them is a sexist pig that bullies me and refuses to help me so I fail his class so that he can make fun of me in front of the rest of the students. Another of my teachers takes a task that could be over in 10 minutes and makes it last the entire 1 hour 15 minute lesson, and her voice is the most boring thing I have ever heard, it actually sends me to sleep 90% of the time. My last teacher is actually a really good teacher, she's fun, she helps you out a lot and she makes classes interesting and actually lets pupils share their views and have debates in class, her one flaw is that she spends over half of every lesson chatting with us all about meaningless things that we never actually get anything done.
So, as you can probably tell, we don't actually do a lot of work in class, and then get set at least 5 hours a week of homework...from each teacher. That's right, 15 hours of homework, to say I usually can't start my homework until about 7pm due to needing to eat and having to spend time with my family, if I wanted to go to bed at a reasonable time that leaves 3 hours a night, not too bad, but I also work 3 nights a week and stay at my boyfriend's house most Friday nights and stay most of the Saturday because that's the only time I get to see him. That leaves me with approximately 10 hours a week if I try and squeeze some in around my weekend shifts. Them god forbid I see my friends.
Then there is all the other things college want you to do on top of the homework. Revise for the tests they give us every god damn week. Have a part time job to gain employability skills. Do endless hours of volunteering, it'll look great in your personal statement. Do extra reading around your subjects to enhance your learning. Read for fun, you need to enhance your literary skills. Do and extra-curricular activity like dance or archery. Have a hobby like photography or something that demonstrates social skills, you don't want to be too academic. Oh but don't forget to have a social life, you need to maintain a healthy balance in your life otherwise you will become too stressed and your grades will drop and then we will have to give you extra work.
Am I the only person that can see the ridiculous, unrealistic standards that our educational system sets for us? It's a fucking joke. It is literally impossible to do all of these things, there just isn't enough time, even without sleeping or eating, the goals set for students are just unachievable, and this is a huge factor in why so many teenagers and young adults are suffering so much.
Something needs to be done about this, but I just don't know where to start.
