t.A.T.u - Я сошла с ума/All the Things She Said mash-up
Heated Rivalry S01E04 - Rose
Earlier on this blog, I already said that the renewed popularity of t.A.T.u. through Heated Rivalry would eventually push them to try performing outside of Russia and the Ukrainian territories Russia has occupied since 2014.
And what do you know?
They decided to announce a show in Tbilisi — in Sakartvelo (Georgia). For those who might not know: Russia still occupies parts of Sakartvelo and currently bankrolls a pro-Russian government there, which people in Sakartvelo have been actively protesting against.
This is exactly what Russian soft power looks like in practice — arriving as a seemingly “cultural” product, but functioning as part of broader political influence.
Georgians made it clear they didn’t want to host yet another openly pro-Russian band, and without much commentary, t.A.T.u. canceled the show — even though tickets had already been sold (and yes, many Russians have relocated to Sakartvelo since 2022).
The real question is: will Europe and the US be able to do the same when — not if, but when — t.A.T.u. decide to tour there?
I’m really not sure they will, but we will see.
P.S. I’m adding a link to my previous post, where I go into a bit more detail about the band’s political actions and views, even though that’s only part of it:
💬 0 🔁 31 ❤️ 71 · Why is a song by a russian band that has spent years supporting its country’s war of aggression against Ukraine being use
There’s no discussion of Sakartvelo in that post, so I ask you to read about it separately — but for brief context, I’ll add a few words here from @redjaybathood
