Blackthorn
Found this amazing blackthorn tree on the way home. It looked really ancient and gnarly. The thorns were quite grim.
A selection of Highgate angels.
Just finished this beauty as background for #sylvicscomic . It’s a great general intro to the Neolithic and a fab update on what had happened in archaeology over the last, errr 20 years, since I finished my degree. For those that partake in the Brexit debate it’s a powerful reminder that Britain has more often than not been the participant and beneficiary of European interaction and innovation.

Jet lag had me up at 5am so I hit the inks ...
A few doodles and ideas from the last few days. Some will end up in the next pages of Sylvics.
Hawthorn in full bloom this week so I took a few snaps as Sylvics reference. The smell was amazing; delicious to the point of over powering. Whilst adoration of blossom is still a large part of popular culture in many countries the importance of Hawthorn has fallen out of popular culture in England over the last 150 years. Long associated with fertility and luck hawthorn adorned maypoles as well as being a traditional part of a brides bouquet. It would be placed on a newborns’ crib for protection. Sailors would carry it to sea to guard against storms. I am going to thread some of these themes into Sylvics in the coming chapters, so watch out for them.
