BIOGRAPHY: Unlike all other start up success stories, this one does not begin in someone’s garage. It began in a lab at the Middleton Institute of Science and Technologies. Benjamin Drakken, in his junior year at the age of 18, finally had a breakthrough on the project he had been working on. It wasn’t until years later, post graduation and while he was employed as a software engineer at a large company, that he finally put in a patent and began his own company. Due to his use of robotics, real time control, and intuitive interfaces, his designs were sought after by both industrial users as well as the common consumer, though they would never know it.

BIOGRAPHY: Following in her mother’s footsteps, May von Drake wanted to be an actress. She started at a young age, booking whatever commercial or guest role she could and only grew from there. Ensuring she could be the third shiny star alongside her sisters, a matching set. It led to more roles in television, finally able to get her name in the opening credits for anyone and everyone to see. Her career was taking an upward trajectory and while auditions would never get any easier, she had gotten far more comfortable with the routine of it all. 

After an audition in New York for a starring role in an upcoming television series, May headed down to Florida to watch her sister play in a tennis tournament, reuniting the trio. It had been a good time until her poor sister had gotten hurt and had to pull out of the tournament. As if the universe was balancing the scales between the three, in the wake of June’s bad news, May got a call back– she had gotten the part! Except she couldn’t say anything to anyone, not wanting to shove her good news in June’s face. So she decided to keep it to herself, at least until they got back home. 

BIOGRAPHY: 

It was by pure dumb luck that James found himself in the life he had. He had always thought he would follow in his fathers’ footsteps, working for their small but effective moving company. It wasn’t like the old men could keep that up forever and someone had to take care of them. He had started working with them at 15, even if he had been just a small scrawny thing back then, and figured that was going to be his life. It wasn’t bad, and it wasn’t like he had any ambition or want to do anything else. 

Drumming was just supposed to be something he did for fun, after school or on the weekend, with his friends. He never took anything they did seriously because it had never been serious. They did covers at house parties, they sat around tinkering in Justin’s room for hours and having a laugh, they performed for free at a bar for a crowd of 9 people every Tuesday night because it wasn’t a far drive and got them beer. It wasn’t supposed to actually go anywhere. 

But by the power of the internet, their front man’s desire, and fans becoming, well, fans, they actually started to carve out a little place for themselves in the world. It wasn’t until James got paid for playing that he realized what was going on, and had to go have a conversation with his fathers. Surprisingly (or maybe not so) they were supportive– they had made their own path in life, they wanted him to make his. 

BIOGRAPHY:

Ken had never been anyone’s first pick to take over the company. Ken wasn’t even Ken’s first pick, but circumstances out of everyone’s hands had decided that he would be the one to take over after his parents’ untimely deaths. It was just supposed to be a temporary thing, though. Until the legal details could be worked out to allow the second eldest, Kevin, to take over. Ken was more than happy to keep the seat warm for his brother, and decided that he was going to ensure that the table was set for him when he was allowed to sit down at it. 

But to everyone’s surprise, Ken was a great fit. He not only held down the fort, but made subtle changes that helped everyone along the food chain. So much so that when the time came for Kevin to take over, it was revealed that the board had locked Ken into the position with a contract he had signed without reading in full– if he quit without the proper notice, then the company would no longer be in the Carson family’s possession and the board would take over. 

Good for the company! 

Bad for family dynamics. 

BIOGRAPHY: 

Toby’s first day on the job had been in an office. Newly hired as a photographer and writer for a magazine that he had loved since he was a kid in Melbourne, Australia. Luckily he didn’t stay inside very long, and instead spent his days out doors, learning to tell stories. His first day in the field was spent photographing ring-tailed possums, noses twitching as they sat among the trees of someone’s back garden. His first wildlife story was documenting the daily rhythms of a group of Emu’s during the ever changing weather of the winter season. Back then he had used a cardboard refrigerator box as a blind, covered in a camo bedsheet. At the all-hands meetings, he learned the complexities that went into producing a magazine and how they could plan for an issue a year in advance. All while sitting around a tea and coffee ring stained table with lunch sandwiches, arguing over content and placement and what stories people wanted to write. The perfect boot camp for a storyteller that anyone could ask for. 

Those early years shaped him more than any other period in his life. Beyond the general basics, he learned how to track animals and gauge their movements and body language, build blinds, manage extreme heat and cold and get trucks unstuck from a variety of circumstances without the assistance of RACV. He learned to leave places better than he found them and to shut any gate he went through after himself, that if a farmer said, It’s just over that hill there, that he was in for a trek, and that land wasn’t just property to some but a family’s livelihood. He learned how to build trust, and that it took time, for both man and animal. And he took all of those lessons with him as he began to travel, venturing farther and farther from home to shed some light on the little pockets of life all over the world.  Now, as someone who might be considered a vet of the trade, Toby thought himself prepared for anything!

BIOGRAPHY:  The first time David Hatter had a brush with death had been when he was born, and from there his mother had been convinced the Grimm Reaper had taken a liking to him. A fever had spiked a few weeks into his life and kept him in the hospital for far longer. From there it was one thing after another. An almost drowning, a nasty fall down a flight of stairs, choking on candy, a kick to the head by a horse, the list goes on. 

And yet, he had never actually died. This did not give him a God Complex, believing himself to be invincible as his siblings often thought, but it did make him wonder what kept setting his name back on the list. Why had he been able to survive an electrocution from a bad wiring job on a site? Why had he been able to wake up again after a nasty accident on his motorcycle? It wasn’t as if he was putting himself in high risk situations, he just happened to wander into them and be able to walk out of them, too.
