Wrong Attachment || Shiftmind
Toby looked surprised — which was not surprising to Holley. After all, it wasn’t like one expected the average citizen of Swynlake to be tapped into Australian politics. But it also confirmed her suspicions that the email attachment had been a mistake, instead of a deliberateÂ
Not that that was too much of a deduction, of course.Â
“Oh — you know the Minister?” She tilted her head. “You sent me a whole file about him. It was quite thorough, you know. A whole list of allegations against him that were rescinded… is that something you’re working on?”
It definitely wasn’t Squire material, but perhaps Toby had been doing a longer investigative project in his downtime. For all her many, many (many, many) faults, Hearst-Pulitzer didn’t mind them taking on freelance projects, so long as it was something that they would “never ever” publish in the Squire. And a deep dive on a politician across oceans and continents seemed to fall in that bucket.Â

He had sent her a file? No he hadn't! Why would he have done that?
For a moment, paranoia crawled up out of the gutter and made his stomach turn. Had the Minister found him? All the way over here? It probably couldn't have been all that hard, since Toby hadn't changed his name or anything, and it was printed on any of the stories he wrote or pictures he had taken.
But then how had he gotten to Ms. Shiftwell?
That was where the fear promptly stopped dead. He had too much good faith in his co-worker to think that she could be bought out by someone to be doing anything like that.
Woosh, he seriously needed to get a grip.
"Oh! I'm sorry about that, I must've sent the wrong thing your way," he said, ducking his head sheepishly to readjust his glasses. "But nah, nah, yeah. It's, um, it is something I'm working on. Have been for awhile, actually. It's just a personal project, nothing official. And certainly not for here, you know! I doubt anyone in this town even knows the guy." He paused, then gestured toward her, "Except for you, now. And maybe the one other Aussie I've heard in Castle Suites."
Another pause. More awkward than the first as he seemed to search of where to navigate.
"It's why I left last year."
