A/N: Just a little something something, The reader and Robert get to know each other. Nothing crazy. Iâm still learning how to write for Robert so consider this a test run.
Itâs also been a while since Iâve written anything bear with me
Days at SDN are majorly monotonous which is surprising given you work as a dispatcher for heroes. Sure the situations you put them in can be stressful, but all in all you just sit there and click a few buttons for most of your day and give a âgood job team!â When the days out.
In a way youâre still doing great hero work, helping people get saved, making sure your team is safe, all that good stuff, Really fuels the pride. But after being out on the field on your own? Being the guy in the chair isnât exactly as exhilarating as punching bad guys or sneaking around for information.
You try and fill your day with other things, changing up your routine a bit, trying new foods, you know, things someone stuck in a mid-life crisis does as a last-stitch effort to feel something.
But in the end, nothing's new.
Until, he walked in.
At first glance he wasnât exactly striking, especially not standing next to someone like Blonde Blazer, but upon closer inspection (as close as you could from a quick glance from your cubicle) there seemed to be more to him. You passed it off as nothing, you probably wouldnât get to see him again amongst the sea of once great heroes.
Thatâs what you thought at least.
Until he sat down at the cubicle next to you.
You glanced over quickly, catching his eye as he gave you a slight nod. There was, for a split moment, the slightest twitch to his lips but it wasnât enough to even be noticeable.
âHey.â He greeted with his shockingly low voice.
âHey.â You greeted back. You often didnât talk to anyone else other than your team during your shift, so someone else in the room even acknowledging you was a bit of a new experience. âNew here?â You asked, despite obviously knowing the answer.
Sure you didnât know every dispatcher by name, but at the very least youâd like to think youâd know them by their face, and youâve never seen him before.
Well, he looked a little familiar⊠but then again he was just another average looking white guy, thereâs probably a million people who look like him.
âThat obvious?â He responded with a slight tilt of his head, his brown eyes glancing around your face before turning to his computer.
âNo one has sat in that cubicle for a while. Gonna have your hands full.â You respond with a slight teasing tone, looking back towards your own computer. You sounded like you were joking, but you absolutely werenât.
âSo Iâve been told.â He said in a dry tone before moving to grab his headphones, but just before putting them on he hesitated for a moment, and turned back to you.
âMy name is Robert. By the way.â He said as he gave you a slight smile as his eyes studied your face once again. âFigured you might want to know who youâre sitting next to.â He added on before once again turning back to his computer.
You nod with a slight smile, giving him your own name in return before turning back to your computer.
The shift went as normal for you, very little struggle, a few break-ins, a few cats stuck in trees, the simple stuff. Wanting something new to focus on you turned your head, ever so slightly moving your headphones and could hear the muffled sound of people laughing through his headphones. Didnât exactly seem like he was having a great time only two minutes into his first shift. Well, you mentally said your goodbyes now just like you had done with the dispatcher to the Z Team before him.
Itâs a shame though, you thought he was kinda cute.
Before long, your break had arrived.
You had leaned back in your chair after removing your headphones, taking time to just breathe for a moment. That was until you saw Robert roll back out of his cubicle a bit as well, his words surprised you.
âYou got me⊠I love gobbling on hot sloppy donuts-â You heard Robert begin to say as your head quickly whipped towards him. He hadnât seemed to notice you yet as he leaned back on his chair and continued talking
âLove them from my mouth down to my butt.â He continued before finally noticing you out of his peripheral vision. He froze for a second as his eyes widened ever so slightly realizing you had heard him. Before you could say anything he sarcastically added
âFirst days going great.â Before turning back to his computer without giving you a chance to speak.
Figuring it best not to ask you decided to just continue your routine.
And just the same as always, you get up from your desk, walk into the break room, say hello to sonar whoâs always around just screaming at everything in his vicinity before sitting down at the table and quietly eating your food. The same routine every time. You lean your head in your hand as you poke at the food in front of you.
This wasnât the life for you, you belonged out there, helping people first hand. And yet instead here you were, stuck behind a computer screen with nothing but existential dread to occupy your thoughts. All because of one accident you didnât have control over.
And once again, just when you were getting used to your mundane looped routine, you look up, and Robert is there to change it. He walked in, seemingly pretty aggravated as he made his way to the vending machine.
âRough first day, huh?â You spoke up, looking towards Robert who was mindlessly tapping in the code for some sweets in the vending machine. Unfortunately, as he grabbed it, sonar startled him, prompting him to squeeze it harshly.
Tried again
Exactly the same thing.
He groaned before tossing the two now somewhat ruined twinkies onto the table before looking towards you.
âYou tell me.â He said before sitting down and slumping over in his chair. There was a moment of silence between you two before you piped up in an effort to try and make him feel better.
âDid anyone die?â You asked, to which he responded.
âJust barely, but no.â He answered, looking toward you with a bored expression, his hands resting on top of each other
âSo it went well.â You respond, earning an incredulous look from the bored man before you.
âAs long as everyoneâs alive and accounted for, it was a good day.â
Robert doesnât question you further, but he stares at you once again as if heâs trying to piece something together but once again doesnât figure it out. Thereâs a silence held over you for a moment, seems to be a common thing for the two of you, as you both just kinda look at each other. Itâs not an uncomfortable look, itâs just⊠curious. From both parties.
âDo I-â before you could finish that sentence, Sonar had plugged in a very loud blend, breaking you from your train of thought. You were thankful for that, considering the question wouldâve made you look like an idiot. Even if you had known him from somewhere you werenât really supposed to know. You looked down at your food, tapping it a little again with whatever utensil you had in hand before looking back up towards Robert who seemed to be lost in thought, staring deeply at the wall behind you.
âSo⊠Big fan of donuts huh?â You asked as you tilted your head which earned a slight groan from the man before you.
âDo me a favor and forget about that⊠please.â He said as he looked down towards his hands before looking towards you.
âHey, who am I to judge if you wanna get to know your team better. Team bonding and all that.â You joked to which he quickly went to respond.
âIt wasnât-â he paused, realizing he wasnât going to win this and rolled his eyes, but there wasnât any real meaning behind the action. You didnât know how, but you could tell he didnât really mind it. Maybe it was the smile that threatened to appear on his face.
âYup. Team bonding. Thatâs what that was.â He agreed with a sigh. You turned to see Sonar attempting to remake his food. He mustâve fucked up the first time.
âSo what about you? Do you ever have issues with your team?â
You turn back to Robert, his brown eyes watching you with slight interest as he waits for an answer. Itâs clear he wants your answer, no maybe, he needs your answer to come to terms with something in his head.
âNo.â You answered plainly, watching as a slight difference came to the man before you, it wasnât an obvious change. You watched carefully as his eyes averted your gaze, his body tensed ever so slightly, he curled only just slightly in on himself. Clearly that wasnât the answer he wanted to hear so you added on,
âNot now at least. It took a little work though, the first day wasnât exactly smooth sailing. But everyone was alive and thatâs all that matters in the long run.â
He looked back towards you, his body didnât relax but his eyes seemed to tell you he was considering your words.
âWe all have shit first days, you just gotta figure out where to take off from here.â You said as you began packing up your lunch once again. Unfortunately for your appetite that had only just decided to show itself, your break was over. You stood up, picking up your things with you as looked down towards Robert,
âYouâve lasted longer than the others have so I think youâve got it in you.â You said, offering him a slight smile. His brown eyes stared at you for a moment, simply blinking up at you before he offered a smile of his own.
âThanks. I guess weâll see if youâre right.â He said, a bit more relaxed now than he had been earlier. Guess he needed the pep talk. You nod before walking past Invisigal who had walked into the break room, offering her a quick wave before you head back to your desk and continue your work.
It didnât take long for you to notice that Robert hadnât returned to his desk, to the point you almost had thought heâd quit but you quickly found out that wasn't the case as you watched him walk out of the building with Blonde Blazer.
You packed up your belongings, shut your things down and made your way out towards the front. Just as you opened the door you saw Phenomaman blast off into the air with who you could only assume was Blonde Blazer in his arms. Your eyes then drifted down to Robert who stood there just watching where they left for a moment before letting out another sigh, his favorite thing to do.
âHad a thing for Blonde Blazer huh?â You asked, pushing out of the door and walking up next to Robert who had spun around quickly to see you.
âWhat? No.â He answered quickly before looking back in front of him at nothing in particular. There was another shift in his demeanor as he shuffled with his hands in his pockets.
âI donât know, you seemed pretty dejected.â
âIâm tired.â
âTired of phenemaman?â
âNo what- would you stop that?â
âSorry, sorry, just being nosy.â You say, lifting your hands in defeat with a lighthearted smile.â
âI can see that.â He grumbled but he seemed to relax just a bit more, all things considered.
Before you could say anything, you felt your stomach start to rumble. It was pretty loud given you didnât eat your lunch. You cleared your throat before looking towards Robert.
âI was thinking, if youâre free maybe we should get dinner? I wanna get to know the successful new dispatcher to the Z Team. Itâs a pretty rare feat to achieve. Itâll be my treat.â
He looks to you for a moment, his eyes drifting as he gets lost in thought once again before his eyes light up ever so slightly and a smile comes to his face.
âSure, why not.â He paused before adding on playfully, âAlthough I feel like this is more of the fact that youâre hungry and I just happen to be in the general vicinity than it is to celebrate me.â
âShh, don't ruin it.â You joked which earned a small chuckle from him. It almost caught you off guard, but you didnât think to hard about it before gesturing for him to come with you,
âCome on, I've got a great place in mind.â
And before long you lead him to your favorite spot in the city. Itâs nothing close to fancy, it was cheap, easy food but thatâs why you liked it.
âTada.â You said as you stood in front of the diner, earning a raised brow from Robert as he looked up at the words above the door.
âWow, really splurging on this celebration for me, arenât you?â He remarked in a usual lighthearted sarcastic tone to which you responded,
âOf course, only the best for the newbie.â Before opening the door and allowing him to walk in before you. You got a spot on the counter with him and ordered your usual before turning to him.
âSo, Robert, how was your first day with SDN?â You asked with semi sarcastic enthusiasm. It didnât take a genius to know his day wasnât great but it was a conversation starter so it had to be said.
He looked at you with a simple look that told you all you needed to know.
âThat bad, huh?â You asked to which he nodded.
âHad one of my team members decide not to listen to make and lost the perp and injured a client all in one mission.â He said, boredly leaning his head on his hand as he kept himself facing your direction.
He then added on, as if he anticipated your answer,
âNo one died, but it still shouldnâtâve happened. The guy got away. Even if Iâm told it happens sometimes, that doesnât mean itâs right or that it shouldâve happened at all.â The heat in his eyes grew as his fist clenched slightly before he let out a sigh and released the tension.
âSorry, the situations dealt with, itâs over. I shouldnât be dragging it back again.â
You nod, turning to face the counter as the man behind it comes over with your drinks. You give him a smile before sipping your drink and turning back to Robert.
âNo, I know what you mean.â You began which peaked Robertâs interest.
âBut I thought no one dying meant it was a good day to you?â He asked, as he looked back at you, his drink almost to his lips as he pulled it away for a moment before finally taking a sip.
âI only say that because it makes it easier to get through the day without dwelling on stupid decisions other people make.â You said honestly which received a nod from the man before you. You then added, âIt would be easier to just go out there yourself instead of just clicking some buttons and telling people who donât want to listen what to do.â You paused, sighing with a shrug,
âBut thereâs a reason weâre behind the screen and theyâre not I guess.â You finished before taking another sip of your drink.
âWeird to hear someone saying what Iâve been thinking. I thought I was going insane.â He finally spoke up as he looked towards you. âHow long have you been working at SDN?â He asked, his eyes seemed to look around your face, you couldnât tell exactly where he was looking but you knew it wasnât your eyes.
âLost track at this point, the days kinda just bleed together when you donât really talk to anyone.â
âHm, am I the first?â He asked as he tilted his head at you, his eyes had a certain playful light to them as a smile came to his face.
âMore or less.â
âWow, consider me honored.â
âDonât let it get to your head, the title of being the first person Iâve held a conversation with outside of work is one only the strongest can handle.â
âTrust me, I can take it.â
âPretty strong, huh?â
âWell other than the⊠dad bod that I apparently have, yeah I'd say Iâm the normal amount.â
You looked him up and down before looking back up at him with an incredulous look,
âDad bod?â You asked, looking him up and down once again.
âWhere?â You were genuinely surprised he even thought to mention that about himself before you looked back up toward him. His eyes were once again watching you but now with a considerable amount of confusion before he looked away, perhaps a little embarrassed.
âI donât know⊠someone⊠said I have a dad bod and I just kinda went with it.â He said with a shrug, clearly not wanting to admit who had said it.
âRight. Well maybe if I play my cards right Iâll get to confirm it or not.â You added on with a mumble, not looking at him before you hear him slightly tense as he moves to take another sip of his drink.
âSorry⊠too forward?â You asked, a new found sheepishness came to your words as you realized you had said that outloud and looked back over to him.
âNo, no itâs fine. Just⊠didnât expect it.â He said, putting his drink back down. Silence once again hung above the both of you as you awkwardly kept your gaze away from him.
You hadnât noticed the teasing look came to his face as he continued to face away from you, only his eyes turning in your direction as he added,
âSo⊠are we sure there was no ulterior motive to you buying me dinner tonight then?â
You felt your face heat up slightly as you looked away from him. âWhat? No, I really just want to get to know you. Honest. Itâs not every day someone takes up the Z Team.â You frantically explained as you turned the glass slightly between your hands. This drastic change in demeanour caused him to let out a full genuine chuckle as he turned back to you,
âIâm just messing with you. Itâs fine.â
âSo⊠youâre not bothered by the comment?â
âNot at all. Maybe if you play your cards rightâŠâ He teased, with a shrug.
âAnyways!â You quickly add on, skipping over the topic altogether, figuring it better to not think about it lest you say something even more stupid to this man you know absolutely nothing about. Heâs hot, you spoke your mind, stupid decision, moving on.
âSo, howâs the food?â You ask, looking down at the food that had arrived but obviously neither of you had touched.
Your conversations continued, unintentional flirting being thrown about carelessly as the tension seemed to unwind between the two of you. Before you had realized it you had spent a few hours just talking and laughing together about things as if you had known each other for years. It was strangely comfortable.
By now the two of you were walking out of the diner, laughing about something said beforehand as you looked towards him. âWe should do this again.â
To which he nodded with a simple smile, he then cleared his throat before he looked down then street them back to you.
âYou know⊠Iâve got time. I could walk you home if you want. This isnât exactly the safest place at night.â He excused as his eyes looked towards you. There was something different about his eyes under the street light. They looked⊠not desperate, thatâs too strong a word, but there was something in his eyes that said he wanted to do this for you whether heâd outwardly admit it or not. For a fairly unenthusiastic man his eyes said a loooooot about him.
âSure. Why not.â You answered with a smile and watched as a smile came to his face as well. It was quite the personal achievement to watch as his entire demeanour slowly shifted over the day. You two continued your conversation, and you found yourself having to pull yourself from your thoughts much more this time. It was his eyes that took most of your attention. They were so pretty, so expressive, and so⊠you couldnât put your finger on it but they were something. They made him look so⊠cute?
You snapped out of your thoughts, realizing now that nothing had been said for a minute as you were both just mindlessly walking together.
âUh So, you think you can tough it out with the Z Team?â You asked, as you now realized you were approaching your apartment. You pointed towards the door of your apartment complex and looked towards him, waiting for an answer.
âYeah I think Iâll get by. Nothing someone as strong as me canât handle.â He said sarcastically with a shrug as he looked towards you, not really knowing how to end the conversation.
âWell, I like having someone in the cubicle next to me. So⊠I hope you do.â You said with a smile before turning and unlocking the complex door. As you walked in you gave him one last smile.
