I came here for the dessert. But really, Sweet Home Cafรฉ's mountain of bubbles, jelly, shaved ice, and magic, was on my Hawaii bucket list. Not the hot pot itself.
Every time I come home, Iโve always managed to consistently catch up with Kelsie and itโs always a never-ending ramble about school, work, life drama, and whatโs ahead. Sheโs been my running mate in all of this madness since 7th grade honors pre-algebra, where I sat grumbling about not being able to see past Travisโ big head and turned around to check answers/rave about The Veronicas with her.
Itโs never been a one-for-one parallel path for us, but the similarities in our academic ambitions and penchant for certain classes made for lots of shared frustrations, wins, and understanding. As I spent most of break catching up with other people, the amount of my friends who are either not graduating next semester or still unsure about their plans post-graduation has caught me off guard. I am aware that against my choice Iโve had to think about all this much sooner than the average person, but the strangeness of wanting to get excited and talk about whatโs ahead in this new chapter, only to realize we are all in much different stages of our lives has reminded me that we are not in high school anymore. The feelings and silly jokes remain to hold us together though we have all seen more or less than one another in different areas of our lives.
Everyone is in much better footing than my earlier visits back home, having weathered the more uncertain and awkward parts of our ascent to young adulthood. I am thankful for this. To have someone who is still keeping pace with me (though letโs be honest, sheโs always generally ahead of me by a bit), itโs just what I need to get the tingle of rushing towards the goal with people who had seen it all with me. Ryan is in this boat as well, though thereโs something great about almost feeling as if Kels and I had kept doing this together all along while apart, simply because we kept our regular check-ins over the years.
