UK govt rejects multi-billion pound bailout for universities - Times of India
LONDON: The UK government has refused a 2 billion pound ($2.5 billion) bailout request from universities but allowed institutions to continue to charge full annual tuition fees for undergraduates as campuses remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Monday, Minister of State for Universities at the Department of Education Michelle Donelan said institutions could continue to charge full tuition fees as long as high standards of online teaching are maintained, reports Xinhua news agency.
It means the students will still have to pay full tuition fees even if their courses are taught online in the autumn.
āWe have already seen, over the last few months, courses being delivered online and virtually to an amazing degree of quality, and I know the efforts made across the sector to facilitate that,ā Donelan said, announcing a package of support.
āWeāve always said that we donāt believe students would be entitled to reimbursement for tuition fees if the quality is there.ā
UK universities have particular financial worries as the pandemic will cause an expected drop in overseas students, who pay a higher level of fees.
Last month, the Universities UK, a representative organisation, called for at least 2 billion pounds in emergency funding, warning that otherwise some institutions could go bust.
Donelan has announced measures to stabilize university finances, but without the extra cash requested.
Instead, the government promised that some 2.6 billion pounds in tuition fees will be paid early to universities at the start of the next academic year, as well as 100 million pounds in research funding.
Universities will be able to access the Treasuryās support for businesses disrupted by novel coronavirus, worth another 700 million pounds, according to the BBC.
The University and College Union (UCU), which represents many campus staff, said the governmentās support was not enough.
āThis package does not deliver the protection or stability that students, staff and the communities they serve so desperately need,ā said Jo Grady, the unionās general secretary.
Adding to the concerns, some British students want to delay starting an undergraduate degree amid the coronavirus outbreak.
According to a survey by the Sutton Trust, some 19 per cent of British applicants said they were changing their plans to go on to higher education in autumn, of which 4 per cent said they had definitely decided not to go.
It could mean 10,000 fewer undergraduates across the country in 2020-21, and about 90 million pounds lost in tuition fee income, The Guardian newspaper reported.

Do you need to use your legal name when applying to Sutton Trust Summer Schools? It asks for 'gender you identify with' and pronouns on the application so they seem pretty chill with trans people but I'm unsure if I still need to use my legal name or not. If you get a place you have to provide your passport to prove who you are and I can't afford to get that changed yet. I can't find anything on their website about it
If you havenāt got a change of name document then I think itās safest to use your current name, as you otherwise wonāt be able to demonstrate a link between your ID and the name youāve used on the application (plus, depending on whether youāre out at school, the teacher who completes your reference would presumably see the name you use on your application).
Having said that, Iāve not been through this myself and would suggest contacting the Sutton Trust for advice - they have an email and phone number on their website. They will be able to confirm whether using your preferred name would cause any problems, and if you have to put your legal name, they might be able to ensure that a preferred name is attached to your application.
Followers, any experience with this?

Hey! I am applying this year and I'd like to know cheap summer schools to make a stronger application. Anything around 2500Ā£ (with acommodation) would be fantastic. All summer schools I have seen like Oxford Royale Academy or Cambridge Immerse look amazing but too expensive like 4500Ā£. Thanks :)
Helpful experts? I honestly donāt know very much about summer schools, butĀ Iāve heard good things about the Sutton Trust summer schools, if youāre eligible - theyāre free and subject-specific! But honestly, donāt worry too much - the summer schools are great to get an insight into Cambridge/uni life, but they wonāt dramatically improve your application - spending the summer exploring your subject and doing extra reading is just as good a way to spend your time!

The Sutton Trust report āLife Lessons, Improving essential life skills for young peopleāĀ (Oct 2017) makes interesting reading. There is much to discuss within its pages. One of the things that stood out for me is the need to teach written and spoken communication skills including debate, argument, speech and the art of conversation.
