I was thinking about the adventurous life Suyin led before settling down in Zaofu, so I was wondering when Suyin could've met Baatar Sr. After all, he doesn't seem to be the type of person to be hanging around circus performers or pirates, and then it occurred to me: what if Suyin's rescued Baatar from a rival pirate crew who had kidnapped him while he was traveling back from studying abroad in the Fire Nation? The young architect must've been starstruck by Suyin since she easily stood out among her shipmates by her beauty, spunk, and outgoing personality. Despite his usual timid disposition, he gathered the courage to strike a conversation with her, and to their surprise, not only she was receptive to his attention, but during the journey back, they realize they could easily spend hours in each other's company, so when Suyin told the pirate captain that once they returned to the Earth Kingdom, she would finish her seafaring days, no one was more thrilled with the news than Baatar, and that's how they began their decades long love story.
