#super monster

Jack Kirby, after he (mostly) left comics and worked for the animation industry, designed this “super monster” for Super Friends.

Despite being a DC fan, I loathed Super Friends so I never saw the episode this guy was in.  But apparently a descendant of the original Dr. Frankenstein created a monster that was able to capture Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman and suck out their powers.  These powers were then transmitted into the guy you see above, whom Dr. Frankenstein was going to use to conquer the world (what else?).

An artificial creature that absorbs super-powers sounds like the old Justice League villain Amazo.  I don’t know why the producers just didn’t use him and his creator, Professor Ivo, instead of Frankenstein.  Unless they couldn’t get the rights from DC (which seems unlikely, as the production company, Hanna-Barabera, had the rights to darn near every DC character at the time).

Some people believe that the producers wanted to use one of the classic Universal monsters (Frankenstein) so that the show would have a spooky Halloween theme, as the episode was scheduled to air the day after Halloween.

Anyhow, despite having all the powers of Superman and Wonder Woman (I think the only thing the creature got from Batman was the cape and cowl), the “super monster” was defeated by Robin.

The more I look at the Kirby design, the more I think the producers should have gone with the old World’s Finest villain Composite Superman.  Not only did that guy have a similar costume, but he was a substantially greater threat as he possessed the powers and abilities of the entire Legion of Super-Heroes.
