You guys may notice I'm a bit obsessed with this rarepair seeing as how I request so much art of it. It's honestly a comfort ship of mine, as it was the first actual wlw MLP pairing I ever shipped (yes even back in my regrettable homophobe days). So I have a LOT of nostalgic memories of this ship, seeing as how I've been into it since 2014 I've found a way to work it into the Raineverse
Rather than considering her and Rainbow Dash rivals for life in S8's "The Washouts", Lightning Dust admits defeat a second time and just wanders alone having lost any form of support she used to have. Sunset Shimmer, who visits Equestria far more often than she does in canon, meets Lightning Dust and helps her learn humility and thoughtfulness and how to redeem herself, which THEN leads to them having a romantic relationship. MUCH later Rainbow and Lightning are finally able to make up.
