70 years ago... Rolex Datejust Turn-O-Graph for the "Thunderbirds" Between 1956 and 1960, Rolex put the "supersonic" USAF air demonstration squadron, the "Thunderbirds" in the spotlights by awarding the pilots a Datejust Turn-O-Graph pilot watch. During 4 years, it looks like both the Steel & Gold Thunderbirds logo dial versions were awarded to the pilot as can be seen in the 1956 and 1958 Thunderbirds pilots group photos. Note William "Bill" Pogue, who later became a NASA astronaut and flew on the Skylab space station, mission SL-4. By 1964, the "Thunderbirds" flew the Republic F-105B Thunderchief but returned using the North American F-100D Super Sabre up to 1969. Although 1960s film footage shows the "Thunderbirds" still wearing Rolex Datejust pilot watches, it's hard to make out but these were no longer logo dial versions. Arduvaz Kadran Bir saatçilik tekniği Parlayan güneş deseni, Oyster Perpetual koleksiyonundaki birçok kadranda zarif ışık yansımaları yaratır. Kadranın merkezinden dışarı doğru yayılan oluklar oluşturan, ustalıklı fırçalama teknikleriyle elde edilir. Işık, her bir gravür boyunca kesintiye uğramadan yayılır ve bileğin konumuna göre hareket eden, karakteristik ve hoş bir parıltı ortaya çıkarır. Parlayan güneş deseni tamamlandıktan sonra Fiziksel Buhar Biriktirme (Physical Vapor Deposition) ya da elektrokaplama yöntemiyle kadran rengi uygulanır. İnce bir kat vernik, kadrana son görünümünü kazandırır.

Past, Present & Future: My First Vintage Rolex

I got this watch on March 10th, 2025, the same day I was certified to co-counsel murder cases as a public defender in the State of Oregon; having practiced for over 7 years, it felt like a very special milestone to commemorate.

A fun detail about this particular watch is that it was made in 1984, the same year that my mom came to the United States! And as my first vintage watch, it's fun to think that I can pass it off to my son, who might wear it when he's in his 60's, and by then, this watch will be over 100 years old!

What makes this watch even more special to me is that I purchased it with a portion of my godmother's inheritance, and it's lovely to have something that will always remind me of her.

My mom had gifted my godmother's Rolex to my wife, who wears it for important court hearings and special events, and I felt it would be nice to get a matching piece for similar occasions.

How serendipitous, then, that I would find the perfect watch, and then purchase it on the same day as the most important professional milestone of my career yet; as if my godmother were still congratulating me from above :)
