I'm reading Thud! again and I don't understand how I hadn't drawn the connection between the summoning dark and the hiver. I can just see Pratchett writing Tiffany being nudged by the hiver and thinking to himself that it's time to put Sam Vimes in the blender again. It is a great contrast of how a young mind can succumb to outside influence whereas a mature, self reflecting bastard might not, even if they are closer to the impulse to begin with. Also a masterclass for writers because when you introduce something like a hiver then your world is one where entities like that live, the summoning dark is the same, just differently specialized.
I love how Vimes immediate reaction is just "actually the quasi-demonic entity did not possess me and isn't real, I'm just like that", but also how he immediatly uses it for his own goals:
Like, you're literally somehow making the symbol glow while you do this. (Is it the Guarding Dark? Is it the Summoning Dark doing him a solid for the drama? Is Vimes just stubborn enough to make that happen when he wants it too?)
And then the funny thing too is that he's right. He has the potential to be that. But he forces himself not to be through sheer stubborness. Like the comparison of these two lines:
"little maggots" vs "just frightened old men"
It really demonstrates Vimes character, his worst depths and his growth over all these books.
Idk, I just think he's neat.
WIP Wednesday
This is the opening snippet from something I'm playing around with for a whumptober prompt.
I'm back on my angsty bullshit, you'll note.
I've put it below a cut because it's dark; TW for mild gore and discussion of main character death, although he's still technically up and walking around at this point.
These were there too, hidden in the vegetation (all squished on one not very tall tree, to be honest). Alongside Commander Vimes and his Dark Friend.

Unfinished piece of Sam Vimes
my guarding dark tattoo
There's a parallel moment in both Thud! and Nona the Ninth that brings me to tears just talking about it (vague spoilers for both)
The setup is that our main character has been possessed by a horror they don't quite understand. They're falling apart in mind and body. It would be much, much easier - and maybe even better for everyone - to lay down and give up and die. The pain and madness are blurring everything.
And then someone reminds them about a small being they love very much. Bad things will happen to this small bean if they don't survive this moment.
And that realization launches them into turbo survival mode.
What I'm saying is that my favorite trope is "uncomplicated love that carries the sense of duty that gives you the will to drag yourself through hell." Tearing up just writing about it
