Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Having no money means having no money.
Ellie Williams was the drug dealer on campus. There were little to no others trying to take her spot, which made her a top pick for lonely drug-craving students. However, as exam season came to pass and her loyal customers faded into becoming mere background noise, Ellie realised those few customers a week weren't paying her college tuition anymore.
Her big decision didnt just fall from the sky. No! She had tried applying to jobs. Countless jobs. Most of them saying she did not have enough experience or some never replying at all.
It wasn't until an envelope with big numbers in a red font showed up at her dorm, she knew she had to do something about her money problem.
Enter, you, who had supported Ellie's small dealership for a while now, only passing by when you really needed it. You weren't a frequent customer but a great companion whenever Ellie needed advice. After a few visits from you and some deals stretching out into a long stoned talking session, your relationship bloomed into quite a good friendship.
Ellie started driving around a few other campuses after school, talking to students during house parties and giving her number out to anyone interested.
Ellie was on a roll after a few weeks of repeating the same cycle. She never dropped stuff off, always letting customers find her. And after seeing the cash roll in... somthing in her drugged up brain clicked.
"I'm going to ask Caleb to start helping me out." Ellie casually spoke as she was laying next to you on her dorm floor. The two of you had met up to finish a chemistry task, but had started talking about whatever popped up into your mind, so the paper got discarded onto the side of her desk.
"Who's Caleb?" You frowned, turning toward her.
"Just some guy from a party, I figured if I let him hand out my shit and let him keep like.. 15%, I'd make money faster and more efficiently." She explained, seeming oddly calm.
"Jeez that's... a whole different thing than just wanting to get more customers, El." Your eyes stare at the bridge of her nose.
"Nah, its like me asking you to deal drugs and hand off like 85%. Same thing." She shrugged at your comment.
For a second, you could have agreed, but you shake your head slowly.
"That's like... a very different thing. Why... why would you want someone working for you? You're making like 350 a week now. That's insane already." You argue.
Ellie looked lost in thought for a second. The clock on her wall kept ticking as she let out a sigh.
"Its like a full time job yeah. It would give me around ā¬1400 a month." Her eyes darted across the ceiling, but then her head lifted to make eye contact with you.
"But imagine how much more I could get? I need to pay for my dorm and my tuition, you know? Plus, the guy selling me the drugs in the first place is raising his prices." She pinches the bridge of her nose, as if she knew you had been staring at it.
"Dont you think this will get you on the radar, Ellie? What if they come knocking at your door? This is not a normal, average hobby." You remarked once again.
"Yeah, so that circles us back to Caleb. He'll be the face of the crowd. Just gotta make sure he doesn't snitch my ass. It'll keep me in the clear, for now." She mumbles the last few words so quietly you almost didnt catch them. For now..
"Its smart, Ellie. But.. you're making ends meet just fine in my opinion. I dont even make this much money." You're met with Ellie's eyes sharpening as she sighs and sits up.
"Whatever. You dont wanna be having this conversation, I get it." She slaps her thigh and stands up, a clear sign she wants you out.
"Fuck, whatever El. M'just try'na keep your ass out of trouble." You throw your hands up and get on your feet, grabbing your stuff and stepping out into the night.
A few days later, you're at a house party and met with a yet unfamiliar face striding towards you.
"Hey sugar." The low voice says, awfully silent for the loud music surrounding you.
"Oh, hey. Do I know you?" You turn you head towards him to hear his voice clearer.
"The name's Caleb. You uh... you smoke?" He slides in closer to you.
The smile on your face turns into an annoyed frown in a record time.
"What, Ellie couldn't come advertise her shit herself?" You scoff. "No, I aint buying. Sorry pal."
"You know Ellie?" His face drops suddenly.
"Yeah. She hired you didnt she?" You remark.
"Mhmm. Me, Jacob and Daniele." He points to various people in the crowd, also talking to others.
"There's three of you fuckers?" You exclaim, before waving him off and walking out the door. It doesnt take long before your phone is in your hands.
