Reflections on University thus far
I’m only about a month and a half into my story at academia, but there are a few things I really enjoy during university so far and I’d like to share them, and maybe a little advice for those who are pre-university and interested in attending during the next few years.
I’ve noticed that for clubs in unversity, people are typically very kind and accepting if you’re really interested in the topic of the club and want to learn more. I’m currently “in” three, I say “in” with airquotes because I’m considered a volunteer member of one of them because it’s primarily upperclassmen and graduate students (I’m a freshman). However, don’t take this difference in experience level as something of disrespect or whatever. People are willing to teach and learn, so go for it! You’re definitely worth their time and they’d love to know that you and the others who are interested in it can continue the club on for years to come after their passing.
Oh my goodness, I have tos ay that where I’m going is pretty amazing because if you’re in danger for any course, they’ll email you. Academic advising is required and easy to schedule and everyone’s caring. Tutoring is free, many references are free, and the library is open 24/7 to students. What’s there not to love? :D
I don’t particularly like hearing yelling or partying in my dorm at night, but everyone who takes their education seriously are the people that you’ll see the most in classes. It’s not like highschool in any way - People legitimately want to learn and are there out of their own interest. The further along you go, the less people will be acting as if their education will be a “given”.
The level of difficulty and professors.
There may be tears, there may be stress, the classes might be tougher than anything you’ve ever seen but damnit you’re going to nail it. You have to work for what you’ve got and if your study habits are good, you can accomplish anything in university. I appreciate that most of my lecturers are interested and passionate, and also appreciate that they al respond to my emails on time. Be proactive in your classes, ask questions, and be kind. These people are giving you hours of their time to teach you - And the more kind you are, the more lenient they are in the future. Trust me, it’ll help when you type in a number wrong on a digital chemistry assignment... My teacher fixed it for me with no questions asked simply because I did so courteously. Don’t be kind in hopes of a reward though, just treat them like people - You’ll thank me for this advice later.
Hopefully I covered everything, and thank you for reading. So far, I don’t really have any issues with my school aside from the fact that the dorms are loud. But that’s not really a major issue - If not for my inhibitions I’d probably scream in delight at my newfound freedom too, eh? Have a wonderful night everyone!
