I'm honestly pretty baffled by both the OP and people in the notes who somehow did not realize that Neil Gaiman would get residuals for the final season (or movie or extra-long single episode or whatever it is). Like. He co-wrote the book the show is based on. They obviously have to pay him, for copyright reasons.

Also wikipedia lists him as the show creator. He was heavily involved in the development of the show. Even if he's not involved in the finale, I don't think they could remove him as a producer altogether??

Since you said horror film protagonists, I am going to avoid final girls because that would be a whole list in of itself and I am going to focus on fairly recent favorites to make the elimination process easier. In no particular order:

Bulbbul from Bulbbul (2020)

The fact that this film is not more talked about on this website that love "good for her" media is shocking and depressing. I love everything about Bulbbul: her strength despite everything she's gone through, her sense of mischief and a little bit of wickedness, her thirst for vengance and justice. Please watch this movie.

Margaret Daino from The First Omen (2024)

I think I would have loved this film without the final ending scene, but I think it pushed it into top favorites catagory for me. Sometimes a family can be three daughters of Satan. I really need there to be a sequel.

Charlie & Peter Graham from Hereditary (2018)

Maybe this is cheating, but I think it is fair due to the fact of the spoilers and premise of this film. I try every other year for someone to write me gen fic about them for the Trick or Treat exchange. I find their position in their family fascinating and how they intersect ultimately. Two parts of a single whole, but not entirely.

OJ Haywood from Nope (2022)

I know a lot of people are drawn to Emerald, but I love OJ. I love his man of few words practical stoicism, that he's so steady as a character. I love how Daniel Kaluuya plays him. I love that in his personality is the opposite of the general themes of spectacle and profiting of of one's trauma. I love that he is able to understand Jean Jacket because he understand animals more than people.

Anthony McCoy from Candyman (2021)

I love a tragic protagonist becoming a monster because he couldn't stop persuing his ultimate narrative doom. I love the full circle storytelling of Anthony, the modern gothic elements of the story, how he is drawn to his own history that is kept a secret from him.

Ship It

What made you ship it?

Honestly? The first time Faith showed up I already shipped Buffy and Faith. And I was a Buffy/Angel OTP shipper. Now Buffy/Angel downgraded to a 'ship' instead of an OTP.

In, I think 2021 I realized that I shipped Buffy/Faith more especially post-series and they've reached OTP endgame for me.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

It's the ship template for ships like Catra/Adora for me.

There's the obvious enemies-to-lovers trope. Real enemies too, and not just rival to lovers. I love how complicated it got for them, and real hurt but Faith really made an effort to make real amends.

My favorite thing, aside from their chemistry, is how similar they ended up being despite the initial differences.

I love that they have a connection that not even the new Slayers have. In a vacuum, without anything in the way, I love how they really do like each other and get along like a house on fire.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I don't know if it's still unpopular but it wasn't Buffy's fault that Faith fell. I remember that being a popular opinion back during the LJ days and quite a lot of fanfics that Faith falling was her fault.

It never sat right with me, especially all the times Buffy tried to reach out to Faith, but Faith wasn't ready to hear it.

Instead of how it was the adults failing Faith (specifically someone who will be called GUY-iles). Giles allowing and not even caring that Faith is staying in a motel without any supervision was a doorway for the Mayor to enter the picture as a supportive dad.

(Also, can I just add in the comics, much as I love Giles what was that thing where he left all his wealth to Faith instead of, I dunno, dividing it equally or giving something to Buffy? WTF is up with that mess?)

I really liked that there was no “wow you find me attractive despite my appearance” thing with them. Like it wasn’t treated as weird that they were together at any point. (And he did feed info to his master, but she also fed info to hers. It was complex on both sides.)

Yep. He genuinely gave her sincere affection when she most needed it. And wanted her, honestly and sincerely. The actors played it beautifully: the emotional intimacy of the mindreading scene, the lusty sexual joy of the scene where Yennefer is playing with the illusion of a crowd watching them while she takes her pleasure in him.

It was a positive experience overall; it gave her things, even as it also hurt and cost her things. It was a well-told flawed but not “abusive” or “toxic” etc etc relationship IMO.

It’s important to me that the show recognizes that she was lovable and desirable before the change - and how her physical condition is not depicted as itself painful/dangerous/particularly limiting.

All of the agony she was made to feel was inflicted by human beings choosing to be monsters to a girl who had done nothing wrong and was hurting no one. Some disabilities are actually life-threatening or cause significant pain/limitations - but the vast majority of agony for many people with disabilities lies not in that but in the hearts and minds of humans who are hateful and vicious for no goddamned reason.

it is also super difficult reading fic that doesn't just randomly make him dumber and more dickish than he is
