Nibbling at the Roots of the World Tree (Chaos Avatar Zuko), Part 2: Iroh Helps
Latest chapter || Read from the beginning
Iroh arrived home to a dead father, a missing sister-in-law, a usurped inheritance, and a niece and nephew he hardly recognized. Little Azula, barely up to his chest, scoffed at his offer for tea.
And his nephew⦠His nephew smiled as much as Iroh remembered, but at no one in particular. And played, mostly by himself. He accepted Irohās invitations, and did not always respond to questions right away, as if he was listening to a different conversation entirely.
āYou are not too busy with your studies, I hope?ā
āMy friend says that the kind of studying I was doing wasnāt real learning, it was memorizing other peopleās thoughts, and that just reciting what my tutors assign isnāt going to help when weāre ruling the world. I mean, uh. The Fire Nation. And humans donāt live long enough to know much, anyway, so I should find as many sources from different places as possible so that at least they can be wrong in different directions. And my friend also saysāā
He did not have any friends. None that Iroh ever saw.
Story Summary:
That was a very, very big tree. A purple light pulsed at its bulging, split-barked core.
āHello, mortal,ā the tree said.
At which point Zuko scrabbled backwards until he splashed back into the stiller, warmer, deeper water of the turtleduck pond.
āEvil tree,ā he told Azula.
āDum-Dum,ā she said, and stomped off.
