 Stomach flu, medically known as gastroenteritis, is a common condition in animals that affects the gastrointestinal tract, leading to inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It can occur in a wide range of domestic animals, including dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. While the condition is often self-limiting, severe cases can result in dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and systemic illness, making prompt veterinary attention essential.

The causes of stomach flu in animals are multifactorial. Viral infections, such as canine parvovirus in dogs or feline panleukopenia in cats, are among the most common triggers. Bacterial pathogens, including Salmonella and E. coli, as well as parasitic infections like Giardia, can also induce gastrointestinal inflammation. In addition, dietary indiscretion, sudden diet changes, and ingestion of toxins may precipitate symptoms. Stress and environmental factors can further exacerbate the condition, particularly in young, elderly, or immunocompromised animals.
