This stingy thorny plant is called field eryngo (Eryngium campestre). In German it is known by various names, such as Feld-Mannstreu, Donnerdistel, Gemeine Brachdistel, Rolldistel, Elend and Unruh. When the seeds are ripe, the stems break off and are carried away, rolling along the ground and forming clusters, which are called "Steppenhexen". I collected some smaller branches on the rhine river, taking care not to disturb the myriads of bumblebees frequenting the bushy plants.
