It’s a Bonus
Being a step parent is one of the hardest jobs anyone could do. Especially when you’re the full time parent. You may never have birthed this child(ren) but you loved them as your own and your love for them grew from your heart. Sometimes being a step parent means doing all the hard and messy jobs and not being looked at as a real mom or dad. Sometimes your step child will run to their biological parent instead of you, even though you were the one who has been there through thick and thin.
But the best part about it all, that makes it completely worth it, is knowing you are being the parent that child needs, seeing them grow, laugh and smile. Spending family time together. Being that positive strong influence in their life that they look up to - and even the possible sweet utterance of “I love you”.
I don’t like using the word step parent or step child. I prefer the title Bonus Mom and Bonus Child. Because that is what these relationships are, a bonus ❤️

Children of divorce don't owe stepparents a parent child relationship, regardless of circumstance, and trying to force them into one will only make them resent you.
I'm a child of divorce, and my dad's wife tried to force herself into the 'mother' position in my dad's household when I was quite young. I have a mum, I love her very much, and I didn't want another one. I'm now low contact with my dad and his wife because they cared more about themselves than my boundaries.
My sister? Same deal. Resents them both, probably more than I do. She's getting out as soon as she can.
This likely wouldn't have happened if we were allowed to do this on our own terms.
