maybe I'm deeply biased by my personal tastes, but fictional toxic couples are definitely more than just "rival/enemy to lover" ships where the characters sometimes have disagreements or opposite personalities. to me, "toxic" means that the characters' dynamic MAINLY, EXPLICITLY and CANONICALLY revolves around manipulation, hurt, torture, obsession, unhealthy codependency, etc. REGARDLESS of which side the characters are on. like, if nobody stops them, they will kill each other or do very bad things to each other lol (if they haven't already done it…)
I'm saying this bc I've seen some ppl online claim that their classic shonen rivalry ships were toxic where in reality, they're really not at all, or at least, not intended to be that way. personally, I can't consider sasunaru or soriku as toxic yaoi ships bc it's not hatred or malice that drives them to hurt each other, but rather pure care and love. these characters never hated each other, and if circumstances hadn't forced them to end up on opposing sides, they would've had no reason to hurt each other, bc at the end of day, once their personal struggles are resolved, their relationship can return to a normal and better one. whereas, a fictional toxic relationship is, I'd say, when it's unhealthy or abnormal by default xD there's not way to fix it bc it's unhinged from the very start (or at least, the relationship has been broken forever and there's no way for it to become healthy again IN CANON). it's love-hate yk ? (or kismesissitude, if you're familiar with homestuck)
