My friend @starlysâ has a birthday today, so I scribbled a quick one-shot for her. Itâs a thank you too, since she spends time talking to me a lot about different things.
This one is very small, because Iâm still trying to work on my other fanfics, but Iâm happy to have something. And, for once, itâs not based on PokĂŠmon! Yay me, I tried!
So, here, a small Fire Emblem: Echoes one-shot for my friend, below the cut. Itâs about a pair of characters after the war, ten years later. Enjoy!
Out in some dark woods of Valentia, a woman in black wandered around from clearing to clearing. She brushed back her long, messy purple hair, and scanned the trees lined along the sides of the opening. Shaking her head, the woman tightened her grip on the dark purple tome that she carried, and ambled back into the woods.
Though the enchantress kept her steady posture in powerful stride, her shoulders slumped a bit with her passing steps. She narrowed her eyes as she ventured further into the woods, and glanced at her surroundings.
The trees grew tall, appeared grayer than normal ones, and had branches that tangled and twisted around one another. Bushes lining the sides and roots of the trees had thorns in them, deceptively hidden further into the bushesâ branches. Fungi were more common than wilted flowers, though both were sparse across the earth.
âNot a pretty place,â murmured the woman, and she drummed on her tome as she carried on.
âSo then, whatâs a pretty lady like you doing here?â
Stopping cold in her tracks, the enchantress rolled her eyes. Pivoting around, she opened her tome as she caught sight of two bandits and a mercenary. Slightly, she smirked as she narrowed her gaze upon them.
âWould âtaking an evening strollâ suffice as a response?â
âBeen waltzing around here for hours,â contested one of the bandits. âTry again.â
âHow long have you been watching me, exactly?â
âLong enough,â snapped the mercenary. âRumors were right. People went on and on about some mage that was part of the Queenâs old army a decade ago, how she disappeared one day.â He tightened his grip on his swordâs hilt. âThen they went on about how Nuibabaâs old place started to pick up again.â He gritted his teeth as he glared at her. âPretty easy to put things together.â
âSo, you came out here to hunt me down?â She laughed. âHow do you plan on accomplishing that one?â
 âWith my help.â
A mage stepped out from behind a tree, and opened his golden tome. He raised his arm, as light bindings wrapped around the womanâs wrists and dragged her back against a tree, cuffing her to it.
A bandit laughed and hurried forward, twirling his axe in his hand. He pointed it at the enchantress, who scowled at him.
âYou really think weâd be stupid enough to come without magic of our own?â
âIf heâs all you brought, then thatâs not going to do you any good,â taunted the woman. âBut go ahead, try killing me here.â
âSonya is your name, isnât it?â The enchantress blinked at the mage, an older man in white and red garbs. âYou helped our Queen so many years ago. What happened?â
âLetâs just go with me not wanting to let my beauty go to waste,â offered Sonya. âItâs a good reason to become a witch, right?â
âPlease, let us help you,â begged the mage. âQueen Anthiese would be heartbroken to see whatâs become of her comrade.â
âDoesnât she go by Celica now?â Sonya chuckled and shook her head. âDoesnât matter. The Queen doesnât care that much for me. No one does.â
 âThere must be someoneââ
âWhat does it matter, old man?â The mercenary stepped forward, unsheathing his blade. âShe dies, here and now. The world will be a better place for it.â
As he approached Sonya, a beam of light fired out between them. Sonya blinked and glanced toward the source of the magic.
A woman in a pale rose dress stepped from the shadows of two trees, holding a long staff up. She brushed her curly coral hair back from over her eyes, and pointed her wand forward.
Inhaling, Sonya gasped as a green mist swirled around her. Revitalized, she tugged against her magical restraints.
The mage elder, nodding to the exemplar that appeared, waved his hand, releasing the enchantress from her bindings. He quietly departed from the area.
âHey! Hey, where do you think youâre going?!â The mercenary swept his sword out. âOld man, get back here!â
âNo, heâs got the right idea.â Sonya flipped her hair aside, as her tomeâs pages flipped open on the ground beneath her. âYou should run.â
Launching a dark, magical skull from her tome and hands, Sonya fired out her hex, blasting one of the bandits to the ground. He jolted back up and sprinted back, as his companion raised his axe to defend him.
âOh no, youâre not getting off that easy,â snapped the mercenary.
âActually, she is,â called the exemplar. Her long staff crackled with light energy. âUnless you want this to be your final resting place, I suggest you and your men flee. Now!â
âIs thatâŚ?â Sonyaâs eyes widened. âThe good little soldier?â
âMy name is Genny.â She narrowed her eyes and lifted her staff, intimidating the three soldiers away.
âYes, yes, I know, but I justâŚâ Sonya shook her head. âWhat happened to your hair?â
 âHuh?â
âItâs still curly, but now, well, you grew it out.â
 âOh! Yes.â
âNow we canât call you the âlittle sheepâ anymore.â
âGods, Mae wasnât kidding when she told me everyone called me that.â Genny sighed. âSadly, yes, âlittle sheepâ grew up and sheared the wool. Or, um, let it go? One of those.â
 âNo kidding.â
Sonya smirked as she eyed Genny up and down, observing a few flowers that adorned her dress and staff. A teal shawl flowed down from her gold pauldrons. Each of these barely blocked the gauntlets on her wrists and the boots below her dressâs hem.
âYou certainly matured from the last time we met.â
âReally?â Genny jerked back and cleared her throat. âYes, well, I suppose that, over the years, I, ahââ
âAnd now youâre back to the meek girl that I remember.â
âYeah, thatâs fair.â Genny sighed. âSometimes I think Iâm better than who I used to be. But, a lot of days, I still feel like the same old me.â She pouted and placed her hand on her hip. âBut I donât think thatâs too much of a bad thingâŚâ
âWhat brings you out here, anyway?â Sonya folded her arms. âIf I remember correctly, you werenât exactly the type to go out for adventures on your own.â
âUh.â Genny shrugged and grinned. âWould you believe me if I told you it was for research on my new story?â
 âHardly.â
âWell, that is part of the reason,â insisted Genny. âButâŚthe other part was because I heard about you being out here.â She tapped her cheek. âNot exactly you, but the descriptions that people nearby gave lined up with how I remembered you, soââ
âIf you make a crack about my age, I swear, Iâllââ
âOh, no! Not that at all.â She covered her face with her hand. âGods, I still canât believe how I acted around you during those years ago.â
âHuh.â Sonya relaxed as she sank back. âWell, youâd be right, nowadays. I probably should be someoneâs mother by now, huh?â
 âAre you?â
 âNo.â
 âOh, ok.â
âYou could add a little more sympathy to that,â muttered Sonya.
âSorry.â Genny picked at her staff, tracing the star shaped center of its head. âI just didnât think you were looking to be a mother.â
âIâm not.â Sonya huffed. âStill, justâŚoh, never you mind.â She shook her head and started to stroll away. âThank you for your help. Not that it was needed, butââ
âSonya, wait!â Genny chased after the enchantress. âPlease, where are you going?â
âBack to my new abode, since thatâs where Iâm expected.â Sonya dragged her fingers past a treeâs broken branches, plucking a dangling twig away. âShouldnât keep people waiting on the new witch of the woods and Valentia, after all.â
âWitch? Is that really what youâre doing?â Genny followed after Sonya, hugging her staff close to her. âQueen Celica wonât want to hear that.â
âShe does still go by Celica, then.â Sonya smiled. âGood to know.â She shook her head. âBut what does it matter to her, what I do?â She pivoted back to Genny. âIsnât she happy, helping bring Valentia forward to the future, together with that precious King Alm of hers?â
âOf course, but she still checks on her friends all the time,â reasoned Genny. âI told her that I was coming out here to find you, and she wished me well, and hoped that I would tell her about your new life.â She softly smiled as Sonya spun away. âThe Queen was hoping to see you again, some day, too.â
âSo, youâre an errand girl now.â
âThatâsâŚwell, sometimes, I guess.â Genny sighed. âBut, I donât really see it that way, and Celica doesnât really put anything upon me.â She frowned and gazed down to the earth. âAre you just going to walk away from me?â
âKind of what Iâm trying to do.â
âThen you really are like my mother.â She glanced back up as Sonya flinched and stopped in her tracks.
âCheap shot, Genny.â Sonya whirled back around. âFair, but cheap too.â
âIt got you to stop, at least.â
âFine.â Sonya folded her arms again. âWhat are looking to have me do?â
âCome with me.â Genny stepped forward, and placed her staff into the earth. âWe can go back, see Celica and the others aroundââ
âThat doesnât do anything for me, Genny.â Sonya leaned back, letting her hair droop over her face. âJust look at me. Iâm becoming the witch that Jedah wouldâve made me.â
âBut youâre not.â Genny brought her hands up with Sonyaâs. âThe fact that youâre still you means that you havenât jumped from that cliff yet.â
 âNot yet, thatâs right.â
âDonât you see?â She smiled to her friend again. âIâm here, now. You donât have to.â
âGenny, I left you years ago.â Sonya frowned. âWhy are you here, chasing after me, when Iâve caused you more harm than good?â
âActually, you gave me a confidant that I never had before.â Sucking in on her cheek, Genny blushed. âWhen we talked, after our first few times, I felt like I could really open up around you. And I thought you were around me too.â
 âI did.â
âSo, I wanted to keep that going.â Genny cupped Sonyaâs hands close to her chest. âYou left five years ago, and at first, I was hurt because I thought you abandoned me. But then I figured that I had done something wrong.â
âIt wasnât you at all.â Sonya flipped her hair aside. âI told everyone that I was looking to cure witches from their ailments so long ago.â
âRight, thatâs why I didnât follow you immediately,â explained Genny. âThree years ago, they told me that you had disappeared in a remote region, and Iâve been looking for you ever since then. Rumors led me here.â
âWait, back up.â Sonya raised an eyebrow. âYouâŚspent three years searching for me? On your own?â
âNot entirely on my own.â Genny smiled. âLeon, Valbar, Saber, and even Kamui helped me out a few times. Mae and Boey helped with researching locations. Even Celica wanted to come along a few times, and made sure that I had the money and resources to travel.â
âTheyâŚall chipped in? That much?â Sonya deflated. ââŚFor me?â
âYes, Sonya!â Genny beamed. âWe missed you terribly! Especially me.â
ââŚGods, how could I haveâŚ?â Sonya took her hands from Genny and brushed tears from her eyes. âAnd especially you, Genny, IâŚIâm sorry, Iââ
âDonât. I only wish I had been clearer years ago,â admitted Genny. âYouâre beautiful to me, Sonya. And I donât ever want to lose you again.â She inched closer to the enchantress. âSoâŚplease. Come home with me. Letâs be each otherâs family now.â
âGennyâŚâ Sonya sobbed and sniffed into a chuckle. âGen, Iâm not going to be your mother.â
âThatâsâŚok, thatâs really not where I was going with this.â Genny sighed. âI, um, I wanted you toâŚwell, at least, you and I could maybeâŚâ
 âHm?â
ââŚHere, let meâŚâ Genny leaned close to Sonya and kissed her cheek. âDoes, um, is that ok?â
 ââŚYouâre adorable, Genny.â
Sonya smirked and leaned close to Genny, as she brought her lips to the exemplarâs. They remained close together in the woods for a little while, until Genny finally won Sonya over once more.
 âŚ
Outside of the King and Queenâs castle courtyard, at a small market organized in the streets below, a woman with bright, flowing pink hair gasped as Genny finished telling her about her latest story.
âAnd thatâs what I wrote so far.â
âSo, that woman in the story, the exemplar, wasâŚwas that based on you?â
 âAh, a little bit, yeah.â
âAnd then she fought off a whole horde of bandits?!â
âNot exactly a hordeâŚwell, in the story, yes, butââ
âAfter that, she meets her true love?â
âAt the manor above the woods, yes.â Genny giggled. âMae, just give me a second, Iâm trying to get to that part.â
 âBut then that means youââ
 âIâm getting to that!â
âWait, wait, wait.â Mae placed her hands on her hips. âYou? Genny, sweet and innocent little Genny, fell in love? WithâŚwith someone we traveled with?â She gawked as Genny shrugged and giggled. âWait, but, Iâm with Boey, Celica is with Alm, so youâŚwho did you end up with?!â
She only gave Mae a smile after her enigmatic laugh. Mae chuckled and rolled her eyes.
âWell, heâs certainly a lucky man, thatâs for sure!â
Glancing a little past Mae, spotting Sonya glancing over a merchantâs supplies.
Both women subtly smirked at one another.

Jfc, they got rid of line breaks, and I hate them for this, because this looks ugly and you canât tell when the story is actually over without something tacky added on. Also, I have to double check formatting because Tumblr just loves posting spacing in the worst way, yay! This website sucks.
Hooray, you read through it! I hope you enjoyed it!
I wanted to make a story mostly based on Sonya, and I scoured over her Wiki page details. And then I read her ending and I was like, âWow, that sucks. What happened to all of her friends?â (Yes, she does have friends. She joined Celica, she has no choice.) So, I tried my hand at that!
Ten years seemed like a fair time skip to allow the events of Echoes to pass and work on the post-game endings. After all, if you tell me Alm and Celica got married and ran Valentia when theyâre like 12 (actually 17), like, no. Hence, time passing for things.
Since Sonyaâs primary relationship (barring Celica) is with Genny, I decided to go with the two of them together. Besides, they seemed kind of nice together, given their dynamic. Also, I wanted to try reversing how weâd expect them, since itâs Sonya who needs help finding herself and Genny who fights to help her out. Also, it makes Gennyâs canon ending gay, and I live for that.
Anyway, thatâs all Iâve got. Hope you liked it, @starlys!

Yikes, the monthâs almost over, and Iâm very, very late again! But thatâs ok, because I had to make sure that I got this in before this month ended.
Hereâs a belated birthday gift for my friend, @starlys! She requested a story about PokĂŠmon Trainers together, and I decided to make a fun idea from that, using the trainers from the games themselves.
This is the first time that I think Iâve focused on the actual humans for once, not the PokĂŠmon. Weird, but refreshing! So, here we go, with the story below! Enjoy reading it!
The Doubles Invitational.
A brand new competition featuring top trainer duos to help draw in more folks to visiting Alola, the region thatâs still starting up its PokĂŠmon League. Challenging their first and brand new Champion must not be enough on its own by this point.
Twisting some of my brown hair around my finger, I sighed and uncurled it, slowly letting my hand drop. Staring ahead at Iki Townâs small stage for battle practice, I watched some teams as they gathered around it.
âAnnaâŚ? Hello?â I blinked and turned to my partner next to me. âAnyone home?â
 âSorry, MegâŚâ
 âDonât worry about it.â
She brushed back a loose strand of her black hair, just before the wind blew it around again. Rolling her eyes, she softly chuckled as the wind blew her long hair around, messing it up again. The skirt at the bottom of her uniform flapped with the slight gust, and she waited as it died down.
Lowering her dark eyes, she wagged a finger at me.
 âDonât laugh, ok?â
 âNever!â
We both giggled a bit, and she couldnât contain hers from bursting into a light laugh. Itâs the most gorgeous sound to me.
âŚOk, maybe not the most, but I love listening to her laugh. To look into her eyes. To be with her.
If I could actually tell her that, though, then we would get somewhere.
âTrainers, welcome!â Professor Kukui hurried to the center of the stage and raised his arms. âThis will serve as your practice arena for Alolaâs new Doubles Invitational! Weâll start here before we have you tour the four islands with your competition, until we ultimately work our way to the League in Mount Lanakila.â He grinned broadly. âWeâre hoping that youâll give Alola some much needed recognition from other regions and draw in some new crowds, oh yeah!â
âShouldnât we have tried to gather more trainers from other regions, then?â A dirty blonde boy in a blue outfit folded his arms. âWeâve only covered a few here.â
âAhâŚweâll work on that for next time!â Kukui rested his hands on his hips and laughed. âGuess my wife was right!â
 Wife. Of courseâŚ
âAs it is, you all must be tired from the trip,â chimed in the older man in a blue undershirt with a yellow one opened over it. âItâs best that you relax a little before the competition begins, explore the area a little, and rest before our tournament starts tomorrow.â
âOh yeah! Well said, Hala!â Kukui grinned to everyone again. âAll right, youâre free to cruise around! Enjoy your stay, and thanks again for joining our new competition!â
They turned in to one another and chattered together, as each of the teams hesitated before turning to talk with either their partners or other teams. I glanced to Meg, who turned and smiled back to me.
âHey, so, you two are from Hoenn, right?â We turned to the brunette girl in a blue uniform. âIs that anything like here in Alola? I heard the climate there is at least warm.â
âSomewhat, but itâs probably warmer here.â My partner smiled and brushed her hair back again, adjusting the headband above it. âIâm Meg, by the way. This is my teammate, Anna.â
 âHi.â
âWell, welcome to Alola! Iâm Aimee,â introduced the girl. She jabbed her thumb back to the blonde boy from before. âMy partner here is Kent.â
âSeriously, shouldnât we have more representation from other regions?â He scratched his head as he stepped toward us. âSomeone from Unova, Sinnoh always gets forgotten these days, and then weâŚwait, whatâs going on?â
âKent, weâre saying hello to newcomers.â
âOh.â He straightened up. âHello to newcomers.â
âGreat, thanks.â Aimee rolled her eyes. âNow weâre the annoying team.â
âOf course we are!â He raised his hand into a fist. âWeâre the Ace Duo! Weâre going to be a wave that slams back against everyone and wins this competition for Alola!â
âAnd now weâre the weird ones,â deadpanned Aimee.
âItâs fine,â eased Meg. âI can definitely appreciate the enthusiasm.â She snapped her fingers. âAnd actually, Kent, Anna and I managed to capture and raise some new PokĂŠmon from Unova as well, if youâre looking for more representation.â
âAh, really? Nice!â Kent folded his arms and nodded. âAimee and I raised some more PokĂŠmon for this competition too. Weâve got some variants of the PokĂŠmon found in Kanto, but theyâre really cool. Pun intended.â
âKent, Iâm going to murder you.â
 âChill, Aimee!â
âAnother pun, and Iâm burying you in the sand.â
 âOk, ok!â
âHey, why donât we let our PokĂŠmon out for a while?â Everyone turned back to me and I tensed up. âUmâŚitâs been some time for ours, soâŚâ
âThatâs actually a good idea,â agreed Meg, grabbing a Pokeball from the belt beneath her shirt. âItâs good to let them stretch and explore too.â
She tossed her first ball up, and then another after. I followed her lead and tossed both of my Pokeballs out, as our four PokÊmon emerged.
âWhoa, check them out!â Kent squished down low to my first PokĂŠmon. âWhoâs this little dude? Never seen one before.â
âThatâs my Linoone,â I introduced. âHeâs cute, right?â
âDefinitely!â Kent reached out to pat him, but Linoone rushed away and behind my legs. âShy guy, huh?â
 âA bit, yeah.â
âThatâs ok.â He hopped over to my next PokĂŠmon, Stoutland. âThis one Iâm familiar with, though. Heâll be ready to really help you out!â
 âYes, she will be.â
âOh, cool! I didnât even know.â He tilted his head and studied her, as my dog mimicked his motion. âHow do you tell genders without the gender differencesâŚ?â
âNot every gender needs to be defined, Kent,â grumbled Aimee.
âMy bad.â He bounced over to Megâs slender cat. âWhoâs this pretty kitty?â
âThatâs my Liepard,â introduced Meg. âSheâs new to our team, like Annaâs Stoutland. We took a small trip to Unovaâs land some time before we came here.â
âWhat, really? Thatâs cool!â Kent sat back while Megâs Liepard cleaned her paw and brushed her face. âWeâve only ever been here, but Iâd love to travel around.â
âYeah, we did it after our Champion thrashed the whole region,â recalled Meg. âYouâd think a quiet girl like her wouldnât be a huge threat.â
âItâs literally always the quiet ones that kick butt the hardest,â chimed in Aimee. âOur Champion was previously less talkative than average too, yet there she sits, on the League throne and everything.â She adjusted her cap on her head. âNot to mention that Red kid from Kanto who traveled here for the Battle Tree.â
âYeah, but his buddy is literally the opposite, and he was the Champion before,â pointed out Kent.
âHuh. Maybe itâs just some Champions, then?â
âYeah, sure.â Kent stood up before the last PokĂŠmon, who still towered over him. âAnd this is a Hariyama, so this dude needs no introduction.â He smiled back to us. âHala uses one as part of his team line-up too. Should be his signature PokĂŠmon if you ask me.â
âWell, theyâre not asking, Kent.â Aimee plucked a Pokeball from her belt. âCome on, letâs show off ours.â
 âHuh? Oh, yeah, right!â
Both tossed out four Pokeballs as well. Two blue and white PokĂŠmon appeared first, followed by an enormous tree-like PokĂŠmon and one big rock withâŚaâŚcharger?
âThese might look familiar to you,â divulged Amiee. âTheyâre the variants on their more renowned Kanto counterparts.â
âAlolaâs special variants,â piped in Kent. âThese are Ninetales, Sandslash, Exeggutor, and Golem.â
âOh wow, theyâre different here for sure!â Meg gazed up from Exeggutor down to Ninetales. âI like them, though. Different, but fun.â
âFor sure.â Aimee stretched. âAnyway, Kent and I should help them get some exercises in.â She recalled Exeggutor to its Pokeball. âSheâll wait until later though. Otherwise sheâll just stomp all around the island.â
âYeah, ok!â Kent jumped up. âCome on, everyone, letâs get going!â
He hurried off with his Sandslash stumbling after him. His Golem waited a bit, laughed, and then rolled off after them.
Ninetales sat elegantly next to Amiee, who shook her head.
âSorry, heâsâŚexcitable.â She shrugged and smiled to us. âAnyway, weâre looking forward to battling you guys! Good luck in the tourney.â
 âThanks, same to you!â
She jogged off with her Ninetales after waving to us, and they disappeared from Iki Town. Meg smiled as she watched her disappear, and then we both pivoted back to the other trainers gathered.
The quickest to spot were Gabby and Ty, who came with us from Hoenn. They were wanted immediately for their coverage of the event, but the two are tough battlers too, so both were contributing factors.
Gabby seemed like she was interviewing different trainers for the event, and chattered to someâŚvery nice looking swimmer girls. I donât know if Iâd ever have the confidence to show off my whole body like that, but they seemed pretty fit and comfortable, somehow. Or maybe they just want to be ready to hit the water again. Either way, theyâre definitely fine with how they appear, even on Tyâs camera.
Two little girls excitedly bounced around another little girl in pink. The twins giggled as their bugs crawled around, a big ladybug and a long legged spider. The other little girl had some kind ofâŚI think a fairy? She held the little thing before her hands and it seemed too small even for that. Meanwhile, another girl in longer, dark clothes sat and mumbled behind herâŚto a big, ghastly balloon.
âDo you want to go talk with the kids, then?â I glanced to Meg, who smiled back at me. âThey seem pretty cute and energetic, you know?â
âUh, maybe in a little bit.â I scratched behind my head. âHonestly, Iâm amazed that they invited two little twins here to battle against everyone.â
âTheyâre actually powerhouses from Johto, if I remember overhearing correctly,â recalled Meg. âTheir parents are probably somewhere nearby, but these two know their stuff all on their own.â
âAnd who is their friend?â I placed a hand on my hip. âDid you hear about her?â
âNope.â Meg patted Liepard as the cat rubbed against her legs. âOr that girl behind her with the huge balloon creature. My guess is that theyâre sisters too.â
âSafe bet, yeah.â I picked up Linoone and cradled him while Stoutland walked over and rested by my feet. âAnd, the restâŚâ
We gazed at the remaining teams for the competition. A couple played with a baby in a panda onesie, laughing together even as their kid kicked the father in his face.
Another couple, younger this time, laughed and giggled together, pretty much wrapped together with one another. Both had dyed their hair to be the same color, a bright red, along with wearing matching sweaters that had a heart shape on them.
The third couple consisted of Experts from home, an elderly man and his wife, both meditating together. They whispered and chuckled gently with one another even as they did so.
A fourth couple gazed around the area, snapping pictures and bouncing around, showing one another pictures as they laughed and held hands.
 ââŚTheyâreâŚall couples,â I concluded.
âWell, thatâs nice.â Meg knelt down to rub her Liepardâs chin. âItâs good that couples can all come together and battle well, isnât it?â
âUh, yeah.â I swallowed and cleared my throat. âYeah, itâsâŚnice.â
 âAre you ok?â
âFine, yeah.â Linoone wriggled in my arms and I rubbed his belly, avoiding eye contact with Meg. âUmâŚdo, uh, do you want to go talk to them?â
 âSure.â
We walked over to the four couples, as each pair had slowly gathered together, chattering and laughing, somehow easily comfortable with one another.
âAnd if youâre the âYoung Coupleâ here, thatâll make us the âOld Couple,ââ hooted the elderly man.
âHey, those sound like great team names,â agreed the younger man in the sweater.
âArenât you two baking in those things?â The middle-aged woman paused from giving her child attention to study the younger pair. âYou two should be fried by now.â
âWeâre a bit hot, but we had to wear our cutest shirts today first,â insisted the younger woman. âThat, and Kantoâs a lot cooler compared to these islands.â
âGia really wanted to show these off,â chimed in the younger man again.
âOh, sounds like youâre getting primed with those shackles already,â teased the middle-aged man, holding his squirming child out to avoid another kick. âBetter quit and run while youâre ahead.â
âDoes that make it too late for me?â The sightseer tilted his hat and grinned. âWeâre here after just getting married.â
âOh, now why would you do that?!â The middle-aged man laughed again. âItâs all over for you, my friend!â
âPretty soon, your wife gets to run the show,â joked the elder man. âIsnât that right, Jay?â
âThatâs right, ladies, we run these relationships.â Jay, the elderly woman, pressed her hands to her hips. âThese men do as we say, right?â
âYes, absolutely!â The middle-aged woman switched her fairy toy with a Skitty one. âWomen run this show for sure!â
âOh, thatâs how it works?â The other sightseer lowered her phone and spun to her partner. âGuess Iâm taking control of this marriage now, babe!â
âLike I said, all over for you,â reminded the father. âJes, you better bail while you can! Enjoy the single, bachelor lifestyle!â
 âHa, maybe!â
They all hollered and laughed together, not even noticing that Meg and I had approached. I took a step back, cursing my earlier suggestion to walk over. Meg had opened her mouth to introduce us, but the elder man immediately caught sight of us.
âWell, well! Look at these wonderful beauties coming over!â He whistled and laughed. âJay, I missed my chance with some really nice girls!â
âOh, John, please!â The old woman nudged him and walked over to us. âYouâre both actually quite young.â
âBet theyâre still legal!â John winked as Meg subtly pushed me back behind her.
 âJohn, goodness, hush!â
âUm, hi.â Meg lifted her hand up. âIâm Meg, and this is my teammate, Anna. Weâre trainers that went to school together, andââ
âOh, best friends!â The middle-aged woman clasped her hands together, ignoring as her child kicked her husband again. âThatâs so sweet, that the two of you are here! A much cuter pair than those other women, barely wearing anything in just those silly swimsuits! Itâs so nice to see girlfriends here together! I miss all of mine from back home myself.â
âGirlfriendsâŚ?â I couldnât help uttering that.
âYes, good old gal pals! Plenty of schoolgirls that I grew up with, all of us becoming best friends!â Her face soured. âExcept Sharon. She was a horror. And Janice, who was a cheating, lying witch. Ah, and I nearly forgot that rotten Becky, whoââ
âAnyway girls, itâs good to meet you,â returned Jay. âThere are probably some fine men around the island for you two enjoy together while youâre here.â
âYes, oh my!â The sightseer woman hurried over to us, holding her phone up. âWeâre here for our honeymoon, and, oh my goodness. You should see the local men here! If you thought that Professor Kukui was a looker, just wait until you see the others! Fine, toned bodies, just exquisite!â
Meg and I took a step back as the woman stumbled closer to us, raising her phone. I placed my hand on Megâs shoulder, and she patted it as we frowned from the beaming woman flipping through her photos of severalâŚmen in open shirts and swimsuits, all posing in various ways, if they were aware of the photo.
âHey, Noriko!â Her newlywed husband placed a hand on his hip. âYour sights are supposed to be everywhere, but especially on me!â
âHush, Devin!â She smiled and waved her hand at him. âThese girls are single, they should know just what kind of men are available for them. Besides, if Iâm just looking, then Iâm not cheating or anything.â
âHa-ha, sheâs got you there,â agreed Gia, the younger woman. âYou honeymooners are lucky, though, enjoy these beautiful islands for some time already!â
âHey! Honeymooners!â Devin snapped his fingers. âBabe, thatâs a great team name for us!â
âWow, youâre right! How adorable, I love it!â
âLooks like weâve all got great names pulled for us already,â decided the middle-aged man. âErin and I are going to be the PokĂŠ Fan Family!â
âThatâs right, Jan,â piled on his wife, âand with our Furfrous, weâll do so well together, like a real family should!â
âYou have dog PokĂŠmon with your baby?â Gia gasped. âThatâs so cute!â
âBabies and dogs are so precious,â agreed Noriko. âDevin, just when are we getting at least the dogs?â
âOnce we get enough money,â teased Devin.
âPlease!â Noriko rolled her eyes. âWe got plenty from our wedding.â
âAnd youâre blowing it all on the honeymoon, ha-ha!â John clapped his hands together. âTypical young couple spending! Back in our day, Jay and I made the same mistakes. But donât worry, you kids will grow and mature as you go! Learn, life, and laugh together!â
âOk, âOld Couple,â weâll see who pays off best in the tournament,â joked Devin. âUs Honeymooners will have to do our best against you two!â
âYeah, weâll have to!â Noriko jumped around. âWeâve been around here long enough to practice battling along with sightseeing, thatâs for sure!â
âWeâll see how you two measure up to a golden anniversary couple like us,â jested Jay. âOur Hariyama and Medicham have trained for years with us.â
âJes, weâll have to do our best too,â insisted Gia. âWeâre the âYoung Couple,â so we should win against the others!â
âYeah, youthful energy for the win!â Jes laughed. âIâm already looking forward to the battles tomorrow! Nidoking and Nidoqueen will carry us forward for sure!â
âWe should start practicing with our fur-babies, Jan,â suggested Erin, âbefore our little guy needs to get some rest too!â
âOh, heâs so cute,â cooed Gia. âI canât wait to have a family some day.â
 âJes, run now!â
 âItâs your only way, son.â
âHey, I can hear those wedding bells already!â
 âHa-ha-ha!â
âIt was so wonderful meeting you all!â Noriko clasped her hands together. âTomorrow is going to be such fun!â
 âAbsolutely!â
âTake care, all. You too, girls!â
Each of the couples laughed some more and parted ways, wandering off to go train with their PokĂŠmon. Meg and I quietly watched them disperse from Iki Town, and I opened my mouth to comment, but closed it after a few seconds. Anything that I could mention about them wouldnât beâŚtasteful, I suppose.
âTo be honest with you, I canât tell if they were happy together or barely masking their mutual miseries.â Meg beat me to the punch. She smirked and giggled a bit, and I grinned to her.
âThank you, I thought I was all on my own with thinking that!â I laughed. âWhy are they soâŚodd?â
âSome couples justâŚhave a different kind of appreciation for each other, I guess,â delicately put Meg.
âMaybe, yeah.â I placed Linoone back down, as he smiled up to me. âUmâŚdo you want to go north, to the Mahalo Trail?â
 âHuh?â
âItâs the pathway up that way, past those trees,â I pointed out. âI was reading about it while we were flying over here.â
 âOh, sure, letâs go.â
We took our PokĂŠmon with us and wandered past the trees, making our way to the sunset-coated mountain path. Hurrying up and down the isolated trail, we trained everyoneâs agility to start. Megâs Hariyama couldnât quite keep up with the others, with her Liepard and my Linoone dominating most of the way around.
âPoor Hariyama.â I patted him as he collapsed to the ground, panting. âHere, have a PokĂŠblock! I brought one over with me.â
âGreat call, Anna,â complimented Meg. âYouâre so thoughtful.â
Testing some accuracy with some targets that we tossed out next, Hariyama faired much better, but Liepard managed to do the best taking them down as well. Stoutland managed to do pretty well here too, though; maybe her patient temperament helped her out. Meg helped me with directing her better, though.
âSome of those were tricky,â I pointed out.
âA bit, yes, but if you get her to use her surroundings a bit more closely, you can get her to hit more targets.â Meg pointed at the rocks. âLiepard can leap off a bunch of those to smash targets, and that would work for both Linoone and Stoutland. Try it.â
Making our way to the middle of the trail, we battled next, in a doubles match against each other. Megâs Hariyama easily obliterated my team here, and we decided to try to switch it up, pairing them off with their normal doubles partners. Hariyama won it again in the end, being the strongest against the others, but Stoutland and Liepard put up a better fight together than she and Linoone had before.
Whining and pouting, Linoone flopped against the ground, whimpering softly to himself. I laughed and sat down beside him.
âYouâre built for running more than just battling,â I reminded him. âNot everyone can be the best at everything.â
âWell, Liepard tries to,â joked Meg, rubbing her catâs head, and then her chin. Liepard smirked, and narrowed her eyes on Linoone, but returned to affectionately rubbing against Meg. âPlay nice, girl.â
Stoutland sprawled out next to Linoone, and she rested alongside us. I rubbed both of their heads and bellies as we relaxed, the sunset at its end, as the sky darkened. Meg and her team sat down now as well.
âThanks again for coming with me here,â I spurted out.
âHuh?â Meg raised an eyebrow at me, and then smirked. âAnna, weâre a team. Of course Iâd be here with you.â
âYeah, butâŚI donât know, Iâm just grateful to be here with you,â I explained. âWe used to just be those schoolgirls on Route 117, mixed somewhere with atheletes and breeders outside of the daycare.â I shrugged. âBattling that Littleroot girl, though, and having her come back to challenge us again and again, we got stronger together. And now look.â
âWeâre a top doubles team selected for a special invitational.â Meg smiled. âItâs exciting, I know. Each of us here worked really hard to get here.â She tapped my Linooneâs nose. âEven if weâre not always happy when our friends do well.â Linoone huffed and rolled his eyes at her, prompting our laughter.
And I just listened to Meg again, and itâs so refreshing to hear her laughter again. She opened her dark eyes, and I gazed up at her, smiling at her under the rising starlight.
 âMeg.â
 âYeah?â
âWeâve, umâŚweâve been together for a while.â
âWell, yeah, going to the same school kind of does that for us,â teased Meg.
âRight, butâŚyou were always my upperclassman, soâŚI just never figuredâŚâ
âHey, we got paired for that mentor-student program, and weâve been a dynamic duo together since then,â reminded Meg. âYou and I just belonged together, you know?â
âThatâsâŚthatâs exactly how I see it,â I murmured, lacing my hands together. âJustâŚI was wonderingâŚhow do you see us?â
ââŚWhat do you mean?â Her dark eyes studied me carefully.
âItâsâŚwell, Iâm notâŚcompletely sure?â I sat back and tilted my attention to the ground, my heart pounding. âItâs justâŚof the teams here today, weâve got a bunch of different mixes. Some are just working together as they were formed, like the Interviewers and that self-proclaimed Ace Duo.â
âHa, true.â Meg chuckled and folded her arms behind her head. âWeâre going to need our own clever team name, you know.â
âYep. Anyway, I justâŚâ Lifting my shaking hand, I twisted some hair strands around my finger. âThe other two pairs that we didnât really talk to, those were sister pairs. Well, there were those gorgeous swimmers, but Iâm not sure about them.â
âTheyâre probably not related,â joked Meg.
âNo, not likely.â I pulled my legs up to my chest and hugged them. âJustâŚthe last group left together were a bunch of couples.â
âUgh, the couples.â Meg laughed. âThey wereâŚdefinitely something. Yikes.â
âTell me about it.â I sighed. âBut it makes me feel like everyone else has this team dynamic, be it co-workers, or sisters, or friends, or more, and ours isâŚI was wondering which it compares best to?â
ââŚAnna, what are you trying to ask?â
âI already asked it, Meg.â I glanced up at her, and my face burned. âHowâŚhow do you see us?â
 ââŚWait.â
âWeâve been together almost all of our lives, you know. Teammates together, always and forever, that thing.â I turned back down and flicked a pebble off to some bushes. âSo, I justâŚI guess that IâŚâ
âIs that why you even wanted to go talk with the couples?â
âMaybe? I donât know.â I closed my eyes. âI guessâŚI wanted others to compare and contrast with, yeah, soâŚIâŚsorry, I donât know where I was expecting this to go.â
 âAnnaâŚâ
âSorry, we can just forget that I ever brought this up.â I shook my head. âIâm being selfish, I wasnât even thinking about our battling tomorrow, so we should go get some rest, orââ
 âAnna.â
Blinking, I gazed up at Meg; her cheeks flushed a bit as well. She hesitated before smiling a bit. She brushed back some loose strands of her dark hair and stared right at me.
âHere I thought I was supposed to teach you new things,â joked Meg.
 âYou always do.â
âAnd yet you just taught me something new.â She paused and smiled a bit more. âSo, maybe now I should teach you something in return.â
 ââŚMeg, what?â
âJust be quiet for a second and donât laugh.â
She leaned in, and I sucked in my breath as her face closed in on me. Her hot breath washed over me as her lips pressed gently into mine. Our eyes shut as we broke apart and slowly kissed some more. Her hands wrapped against my cheeks, and I brushed mine back behind her hair, and we pressed into one another. Our PokÊmon made soft noises, hopefully of support, as we continued into the night.
Morning came so quickly after that night, and I didnât want to get up. I grumbled as I stirred, rousing from bed, as Linoone whimpered at me, refusing to really move from the spot between my legs. Stoutland rose up from the floor, and she leaned against the bed to lick at me, helping me wake up a little more.
 âHey.â
Rubbing my eyes, I turned my attention to Meg, and she smiled as she pushed out of the bed across from mine, Liepard hopping out with her.
âUm, hi.â I shook my head, brushing my hand against my messy hair. âUh, good morning.â
âGood morning.â Meg smiled to me. âYou ready to battle?â
âBattleâŚ?â I opened my eyes wider. âOh, the invitational! Yeah, yeah.â
We hurriedly finished getting ready and hurried out to the battle stage in Iki Town. Hala and Professor Kukui waited in the center of the stage.
âNow, each of you are going to be divided into various battles to team up against one another,â instructed Hala. âThese will be our qualifiers, with Iki Town hosting the first round of battling. For this round, only use one PokĂŠmon from each trainer. First up, weâll have Rune and Rime battle against Amy and May.â He waited as the sisters made their way onto the stage. âNow, what would you two like your team names to be?â
âOh, hey there.â I blinked and turned to the swimmers behind us. The blonde spoke up. âYouâre the cute pair of girls from yesterday.â
 âUs?â
âYeah, you two,â chimed in the brunette. âYouâre the only other pair that isnât a pair of sisters besides Ashlyn and I.â
âYes, itâs nice meeting you.â Ashlyn rested her hand on my shoulder. âHope you two can knock out our first round of competitors with us.â
âHopefully we wonât have to face off,â I managed. âUm, Iâm Anna, by the way, and this is my partner, Meg.â
 âHello there.â
âWell, I already introduced Ashlyn here, but Iâm Kylie,â introduced the brunette swimmer. âAnyway, looks like this battle is wrapped up, so good luck.â
 âHuh?â
I spun around as the twins knocked out both of the other sistersâ PokĂŠmon. Kukui clapped his hands.
âThe Mysterious Sisters are no longer able to battle,â announced Hala. âThe Twins win this match!â
âOh yeah! Way to start the tournament!â He smiled brightly for Tyâs camera that focused on him. âBoth teams really showed their hearts in this battle too, solid stuff. Letâs get to our next battle!â
âWeâll have Jan and Erin face off against Meg and Anna.â
âHere we go,â whispered Meg, as we walked forward and onto the battlefield.
The couple across from us smiled to one another and played with their baby as they took the opposite side against us. Hala waited in the middle.
âWhat will your team name be, Erin, Jan?â
âWeâll be the PokĂŠ Fan Family!â Erin rattled some toys near their baby. âIsnât that right, angel?â
âOof!â Janâs head knocked back as his baby kicked him again. âYep, perfect name for a couple and kid like us!â
âSounds good.â Hala walked over from them to us. âAnd what about you, Anna, Meg?â
âOur team name?â I glanced to Meg.
âWeâll go with what you came up with last night,â decided Meg.
 With what I what?
âWeâre the Teammates,â introduced Meg. âWeâre battling partners since we were kids, but weâre teammates in all aspects of our lives.â
She cupped her hand into mine and winked to me. I blushed and nodded back to her.
âVery good, and promising.â Hala nodded and the swimmer girls behind us cheered, interlocking their arms together as they called for us. âAre the teams ready to battle?â
 âYes,â we simultaneously called out.
âGood.â Hala raised his hands. âBegin!â
Lifting Linooneâs PokĂŠball, I lobbed it out, as Meg tossed out Hariyama. We smirked as the Furfrou pair popped out across from us. Jabbing our hands forward, we called out for our PokĂŠmonâs attacks, as the battle together was underway.
Glancing over to Meg, we shared a smile as we battled the whole way through.
Phew! A bit quick on the development, but adorable nonetheless!
Once I was requested to write about trainers, I knew that I wanted to work with doubles teams. And I think Anna/Meg is one of the first pairs that immediately jumps into my mind all the time, for some odd reason. I feel like theyâre a unique and memorable pair throughout the series, and I donât recall many others that ended up like them.
Alola made a good setting, since it was a region that would employ a different approach at getting tourists interested in visiting. I did my best to include a bunch of different trainers from regions, and where I missed trainers from Sinnoh and Unova, I tried adding in PokĂŠmon to take their place.
If I had more time, I probably wouldâve expanded on the Swimmer Girls, Kylie/Ashlyn. I originally wanted them to be the lesbian mentors for the other two, plus Lumineon wouldâve been another Sinnoh rep besides Drifblim, if you spotted that one. Ah well!
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this gift, @starlys, and any additional readers that joined in as well! Sorry again that it was late; I really wanted it to be on time this year. But, I did promise that Iâd get it in before the month ended, and that I delivered on!

Oh geez, the monthâs practically over, and Iâm very, very late! But, here is a belated birthday gift to my friend, @starlys! (I had no idea we had birthdays in the same month!)
Itâs short notice, but I whipped up a one-shot fanfic for her based on a cute pair of Pokemon that she likes. I tried to base it both on the Mystery Dungeon series, as well as my fanfics, so they were loosely tied together.
Itâs a bit jumpy with the pacing, but I didnât want it to take forever. Either way, the story is below, so I hope you enjoy!
Years ago, teams of Pokemon would work together in order to rescue others and explore the world. It was back in the beginning, when these teams were still a new concept, and still had much to prove, in a world filled with knights and magic. Nevertheless, they persisted in the development of such teams, in attempts to provide peace for those that were outside the safeguards of royalty.
A small town of Calfuray had progressed quite well with its teams, leading their country with surprising amounts of successful missions. More surprising, however, would be that their teams completed these missions at their base stages, with numerous members feeling that evolution would hinder their smaller formâs flexibility at performance in the field.
Operating from the Lunar Fortress at the edge of their town, the teams are dispatched on a variety of missions. This is also the home for many teammates, who reside here between their adventures.
Running up the stairs within the worn stronghold, a small orange chicken and a blue mudfish hurry along them, and rush through the halls of the upper levels. They collide with one another and stumble into the main meeting room, the remains of a grand hall from three generations prior. An owl and a parrot watch as they pick themselves up, while a penguin eyes the chicken specifically. Two small dogs whisper to each other, as do four yellow and white rodents, while a red pig merely yawns.
âLate again,â a flower creature calls out. She shakes her head and places her small hands on her leafy hips.
 âSorry Boss Bellossom,â both apologize.
âOh, forâŚI am demanding that Miss Cinccino works with me on new titles for us,â grumbles Bellossom. âHow ridiculous.â She sighs and picks herself back up. âNever either of you mind, Torchic, Mudkip. Weâre just assigning each pair their own missions now, so you missed little as it is.â
 âThank you, madam.â
âHmm. Maybe thatâs better for a titleâŚâ She rubs over the flower petals on her head before blinking hard and straightening her posture. âAh, that is, yes! Letâs get everyone assigned for todayâs missions. Remember, as always, the world is looking to us, as well as the other teams around the country, to prove that these teams are a benefit and quite helpful in forming and safeguarding the world.â
 âYes, maâam!â
âGood. Letâs get to assignments, then.â Bellossom gazes over the teams and nods. âThis group will be splitting rescue and exploration details. Chatot and Rowlet, you two ladies will be guides for a timid Noibat that somehow was placed in charge of an expedition route to the recently discovered Lost Chamber of Queen Bastiodon.â Both birds nod as Bellossom rubs her cheek. âChatot, please do make some time to help Rowlet familiarize herself with the routes, as she recently moved here.â
âAbsolutely, Madam Bellossom.â Chatot winks as Bellossom giggles. Rowlet huffs and shudders to herself.
âMuch better, yes. Head below and Sandshrew will help prepare you two with equipment youâll need.â
 âAt once, maâam.â
Chatot nuzzles Rowlet, who quickly calms herself, and the two fly from the room. Bellossom checks over her teams and counts them out.
âRight then. Plusle and Minun, you two shall be on a rescue teamâŚâ
Torchic shivers as a blue penguin slides over to her. He lowers his eyes and clears his throat, soft enough to only gain her attention.
âBetter late than never, milady. After all, itâs always good to see you.â The penguin hops a little closer, as Torchic lifts her leg to hold him back. âWhatâs wrong?â
âA thousand times over and again, Piplup: Iâm not interested.â
Mudkip snickers beside her as Piplup fumes. Torchic lowers her leg and hops closer to her partner, but Piplup persists.
âHonestly, youâd really gain a whole level of greatness working with me,â insists Piplup. âYou and I, together, wellâŚwe could make all kinds of magic.â
âThatâs why weâre not on a team,â reminds Torchic. âOh, and because itâs better to balance each pair.â
 âButââ
âPiplup, if youâre done embarrassing yourself for the day,â calls Bellossom, with the penguinâs face flushing over, âyouâll be working with Tepig on rescue detail, opposite to Pachirisu and Emolgaâs exploration of a recently ravaged town. Little Crina, I believe. More details are below with Sableye.â
âSure, fine,â grumbles Piplup, sulking as he trudges away with Tepig. Mudkip struggles to keep a fit of laughter in, while Torchic nudges her teammate.
âThat leaves Rockruff and Growlithe as the final exploration team, and Mudkip and Torchic for the remaining rescue team,â assigns Bellossom. âBoys, youâll be helping archeologists with Gol Caverns. Ladies, youâll need to rescue Chingling, local singer Chimechoâs lost baby sister.â
âThat should be fairly simple,â determines Mudkip. âWill we have anything else to take care of today?â
âIt will be along the Kielo Gorge,â explains Bellossom, âso, no, that will require some travel time for the two of you.â
âWhat if weâre quick about it?â Torchic tilts her head. âNothing for when weâre back?â
âUnfortunately not.â Bellossom shrugs. âBy that time, it will be sunset, which is when our nocturnal teams take charge. That will be all, so you are dismissed for your missions. See Sandshrew and Sableye for useful equipment regarding your respective assignments below.â
Both teams nod and exit the meeting hall, venturing back down the fortress stairwell. Mudkip bursts out laughing, as Torchic jumps from her partnerâs sudden chortles.
 âWhatâ?â
âThat idiot penguin,â laughs Mudkip. âHeâŚhe really keepsâŚtrying with youâŚ!â
âOh, please.â Torchic sighs. âItâs like he has no idea what Iâm even looking for.â
âHeâs missing out on the partner dynamic around here,â jokes Mudkip.
 âClearly.â
Down to the lower levels, both wander past an open door for exploration supplies. Sandshrew waves as Plusle and Minun giggle to each other, waving back to her. Ambling onward, they stop as Piplup and Tepig exit a room.
âAha, youâre a rescue team too.â Piplup smirks. âYou knowâŚif our missions happen to be located nearbyââ
âUnless youâre going to a gorge too, theyâre not,â interrupts Mudkip, rolling her eyes. âJust keep walking, Pip.â
âExcuse you, I was speaking withââ
âCome on, Pip,â teases Tepig. âThe sooner we complete the mission, the sooner we get back to rest.â
âOhâŚfair enough. Letâs go.â Piplup shivers. âAnything is better than being with that creepy ghost.â
 âI heard that!â
Both scurry off, as Torchic and Mudkip peer inside of the room. They wander in, as Sableye smacks his counter.
âUgh. I hate rescue detail.â He folds his arms. âNothing pretty comes out of this, and I get insulted more here than on exploration duty.â He rubs a ruby on his counter, muttering to himself as Mudkip and Torchic approach.
âUm.â Torchic shudders as Sableye turns to her. âH-hi.â
âFor goodnessâ sake, Iâm not going to eat you or steal your soul or whatever,â complains Sableye. âThat penguin was enough of an insult.â
 âSorry.â
âWe just need some supplies and information on rescuing a Chingling in the Kielo Gorge,â explains Mudkip. âCan you help with that?â
âAh, that one. The poor dear.â Sableye sinks back. âIâve been so worried about that one. Sheâs gone missing while her sister is just a mess, afraid to perform for tonightâs show and everything.â
âYep, itâll be up to us to rescue her.â
âYouâd better!â Sableye grins, as both Torchic and Mudkip steel themselves from trembling. âIâm counting on you two to do well! That poor sweetie needs the best we can offer, in my book!â
âSpeaking of,â pipes up Torchic, âshould I take a tome for spells?â
âHuh? No, thatâs certainly too much for you to juggle.â He ducks beneath his counter, and pops back up, opening a small black box, with a gold and silver medallion inside of it. âYou should use this, itâs a Sorcery Amulet. This imbues you with ability to utilize magic spells. Just recall any that youâve learned, and it helps you take care of the rest.â He smirks at the chicken. âNot that Fire types usually need it, since spitting fireballs takes care of most obstacles, but maybe youâll watch out for the environment.â
âOf course I will,â promises Torchic, as Sableye slips the necklace around her. âThank you.â
âYouâre welcome.â He digs behind the counter, and produces rope and a dagger. âAnd you seem tougher, some light muscle definition going on there, so youâre likely her warrior partner.â
âHa, I donât know about warriorâŚâ Mudkip giggles and takes the equipment, strapping the dagger around a belt on her stomach.
âThatâs easier for quadrupeds to grab the blade with their mouths or forearms,â details Sableye. âHopefully you wonât need that much, but it could come in handy in a pinch. The rope is obviously in case you need repelling of any kind. Valleys do involve ups and downs, somewhere along the line. Though, Iâd imagine that youâd be towards the bottom.â
âYep, I do like bottoms,â jokes Mudkip. âBut you, on the other handââ
âThink youâre funny, huh?â Sableye folds his arms, but chuckles. âActually, I could use a joke right now. The other teams here today have been suchâŚrude cretins, I canât even think of a better insult. Ugh!â Sableye buries his head on the counter. âAnyway, there isnât much activity down there, so you two just have some searching for the baby bell. Nothing else of much interest, so youâre good to go.â
 âThanks again!â
âSure, sure.â Sableye picks his head up and waves as the pair hurries off. âBe safe!â
âHey, hey, race you from the town,â challenges Mudkip, rushing ahead of Torchic from the fortress.
 âWhat?! Wait, Mudkip, stop!â
Bolting after her partner, Torchic chases Mudkip from the stronghold, as they set off from violet-filled town and onto their mission.
After traveling through a forest for several hours, Mudkip and Torchic make their way to the base of the valley, hopping down stones to enter the gorge, treading lightly through the stony stream and watching the rocky walls rise around them.
âIt goes on a lot further than I was expecting,â observes Torchic. âWeâd better stay close, or weâll have to go searching for one another.â
âKeeping close to you is easy,â teases Mudkip, tapping her tail against Torchicâs side. She smirks as Torchic blushes lightly. âIâll take that as a mutual feeling, then?â
âHush. Weâre looking for a baby, notâŚnotââ
 âFlirting?â
 âThat.â
Giggling, Mudkip slows to control herself, as Torchic huffs and storms ahead. Mudkip jumps and hurries after her.
âHey, you just told me to stay close!â
âWell then, behave!â Torchic shivers. âActing like Iâm just some silly town maiden waiting to be swept from her feet isnât what we need right now.â
âOk, ok, Iâm sorry.â Mudkip frowns. âI justâŚI donât know, we donât get a lot of time together, so I thought weâd spend some of it out here.â
âMaybe after we find Chingling,â suggests Torchic. âMission takesââ
 âPriority, yeah.â
With a sigh and a roll of her eyes, Mudkip continues on, with Torchic lagging back a bit. They stroll ahead for a while, calling out for the missing baby, with no luck or response. Further along, Mudkip slows and pushes Torchic back.
 âWhatâs wrong?â
âAhead, the stream gets deeper,â reveals Mudkip. âIf we keep going, you sink and drown on me.â
âWell, Iâd hope that I would be a bit smarter than that,â mumbles Torchic.
âWe could have you climb on my back, but I donât want you falling into the water at all,â decides Mudkip. âThere has to be another way.â
âKielo Gorge goes on further than just the shallow side of the stream,â reminds Torchic. âIf we stop here, then we donât reach Chingling.â
âOk, then youâll wait right here, and Iâll go ahead.â
âAbsolutely not!â Torchic ruffles her feathers. âIâm not some helpless princess that stops because thereâs water in the way!â
âListen, Iâm not letting my best friend since childhood drown because she thinks she has something to prove,â Mudkip snaps. âSo, just wait while I explore ahead.â
âAnd Iâm not waiting while my partner does all of the work and ends up finding trouble,â rants Torchic, âand gets herself hurt or killed, just because she was too stubborn about me going with her!â
Silence overcomes them, as they glare into one anotherâs eyes. Torchicâs legs shudder and she plops down on a stone. Mudkip blinks and jumps up, as Torchic falls back over.
âAh, Iâve got an idea! I can use the rope, tug you through the water, and weâll make some kind of raft for you to sit on!â She pauses and giggles at Torchic. âAnd you could stay flopped over just like more often.â
âHush up!â Torchic forces herself back up. âExactly how are we supposed to make a raft?â
âGive me a few minutes; Iâm sure there are branches and twigs around here that can help me make one.â
Hopping into the stream, Mudkip swims around, and dives under to search for useable wood. She gasps as a stone rockets from beneath her, forcing her back up to the surface. Pivoting around, she faces Torchic, as the chicken releases her amulet from her beak. Glancing back, Mudkip sees a full strip of stone stretching down, creating a bridge for them to venture across.
âActually, I realized that this would be easier,â resolves Torchic. âYou know, because I can make magic.â
âYeah, we should have led with that.â Mudkip chuckles. âLead the way, then.â
Torchic nods, and walks ahead, as Mudkip checks over the bridge before following. She waits as Torchic reaches the end, and sinks the bridge behind her while raising more stone walkways ahead of them.
âChingling, are you there?â Torchic steps to the edge of the bridgeâs side; Mudkip is quick to her side. âCan you hear us? We know your sister, Chimecho.â
âNo we donât,â mutters Mudkip. She is met with a rough nudge from Torchic. Aloud, she calls, âYeah, your sister sent us to come find you. So, are you out there?â
Again, they continue onward, with stone columns rising and falling from the waters below. The pair progresses fairly quickly through the length of the stream, though as Torchic creates her eighth walkway, she pants and plops onto the ground. Mudkip lies beside her, nuzzling her.
âWhere could she be?â Torchic shakes her head. âWeâve been searching for a while now.â
âDonât panic,â assures Mudkip. âWeâll find her.â
 âRight, butââ
âJust take it easy,â Mudkip persists. âLet me check the water, and make sure that she didnât get hurt or anything.â
Diving below once more, Mudkip swims beneath the stream. Torchic worriedly watches the waters until Mudkip resurfaces, wildly shaking the water from her face.
âOk, yeah, I found nothing.â She climbs back up by her partner and sprawls out. âDo you maybe, I donât know, have a spell that can just track Chingling?â
âSomething to locate her?â Torchic shakes her head. âI donât think that even exists. This medallion can help me shift the world around us, and channels magical powers, but it doesnât do anything like establishing links between others.â
 âHmm.â
âThis is making me uneasy,â admits Torchic. âI know you told me not to, but itâs dreadful that we havenât found her.â
âMaybe we underestimated the difficulty,â relents Mudkip. She sighs and pokes Torchic. âDoesnât matter, though. Weâll find her, especially because we have to.â
Both scoot closer together, and take a few moments to rest together, as Torchic rubs against Mudkip, who nudges her back with her head. They watch the stream momentarily before Mudkip pushes herself up, and prods Torchic.
âCome on. We canât give up yet.â
âYouâre right.â Torchic rises. âOk, soâŚmaybe if I can get a good spell from what Iâve learnedâŚâ
âHey, I was wondering,â Mudkip sidetracks. âIf you evolve, wonât your concentration be better focused on physical combat instead?â
âUm, perhaps? Or maybe Iâll keep up using spells.â Torchic shakes her head. âHey, we have to focus on finding this child.â
 âSorry, sorry.â
âItâs fine.â Torchic taps the ground with her talon. âIf we could just come up with something.â
 âWait, whatâs that?â
Mudkip spots a flower floating in the stream, a long stem with several bell-shaped white flowers on it. Torchic blinks, and glances further along, with several plucked flowers floating in the waters ahead of them.
âThat, my dear Mudkip, would be our trail.â
 âTook long enough.â
Ready to run ahead and after the floating flowers, Torchic and Mudkip only get a slight way along the path before a purple shadow rises from behind them. Screeching rings out, and both travelers groan as they attempt to block the noise. Once it ends, they spiral around to find a ghost floating just a little above them. Behind her is a purple bubble, with a small, golden bell-shaped creature inside of it.
 âIs thatâ?â
 âThatâs her, thatâs the baby!â
âGood guess,â a voice chimes out from the ghost. âToo bad this is as far as you go.â
 âWho are you?!â
âMismagius is my name,â whispers the spirit, âand cursing is myââ
âGame?â Mudkip raises an eyebrow. âYou were going with that one, right?â
 ââŚSpecialty,â sharply corrects Mismagius.
 âOh.â
âJust what do you want with that baby, anyway?!â
âFeisty little bird,â taunts Mismagius. âCanât I simply want to steal an innocent soul for some measly curses and hexes?â
 âWhat?!â
âWere you expecting something more complicated?â Mismagius snickers. âThe child wanders into my river domain, comes where all lost souls end up, and expects to get back to picking flowers with no worries?â She slowly shakes her head. âNot how life works, darlings.â
âHey, youâd better give her back,â snaps Mudkip. âOrâŚorâŚâ she glances down at her dagger.
âOr youâll try to stab a ghost with a tiny knife?â The witch spirit rolls her eyes. âHow terribly frightful indeed.â
âHold her off,â whispers Mudkip. âI have an idea, but I need to cut this rope and get it ready.â
 âUhââ
âSo, what will it be, my precious interlopers?â Mismagius floats lower to the team. âShall I swipe your souls for additional curses? Nothing works as well as a childâs, Iâll admit, but Iâm certain we can try something new and creative with the two of you.â
 ââŚHow about âno?ââ
Grasping the medallion in her beak, Torchic raises it up, and creates a flash to blind Mismagius. Releasing it, she spits fireballs at the ghost, who wails and flies back from the duo. Scowling, she channels a psychic wave, and fires it at Torchic, who jumps away from the blast.
Mudkip uses her dagger to cut up the rope, twisting it around and fashioning a lasso from it. She secures it with her forearms and glances up at the bubble that floats away from her, gazing at the baby Chingling inside of it. Pulling back, she tosses the rope, but it sails right back at her. Mismagius floats before her, smirking.
âDid you really think I would make it so simple?â She drifts closer to Mudkip, who trembles and steps back. âAwâŚyouâre a cute little pet. Maybe Iâll have some fun before I twist and slice your soul.â
âFirst off, gross,â calls Torchic. âSecond off, sheâs taken.â
Spitting another barrage of fireballs, Torchic repels Mismagius, but the specter mutters chants and incantations. The gems on her body glisten, and she swoops at Torchic, but disappears as she comes close.
 âHurry up, Mudkip,â instructs Torchic.
 âR-right.â
Appearing from behind, Mismagius strikes at Torchic, who flies forward and crashes against the ground. She skids to the edge of the stone bridge, and struggles to rise, as Mismagius rushes over to her.
âTell me, how does a nice dip in the water on such a hot day sound?â Mismagius laughs, as she swoops at Torchic once again.
A spray of water knocks the ghost off instead, and sends her slamming into the rocky walls behind Torchic, before dropping into the stream below. The chicken hops up as Mudkip tosses her rope lasso again, wrapping it around the orb.
âUhâŚright, okâŚâ She blinks and turns to Torchic. âIf I yank this down, will it shatter and free Chingling, orâ?â
 âJust do it.â
Complying, Mudkip hurls the orb down, and it breaks open. Yelping, the baby bell-like Pokemon bounces from the ground and into the air. Floating a bit, she shakes herself before plopping down between her rescuers.
âHi pretty ladies!â Chingling bounces and smiles to the duo. âIsâŚis my Big Sis here anywhere?â
âWeâre friends of hers,â quickly explains Torchic.
âYeah, just follow us,â instructs Mudkip, âand weâll get you back home to her.â
âOh, but my flowers for her,â realizes Chingling. âBig Sis needs her flowers!â
âKid, now really isnât the best time.â
Screeching rings out from the water, as Mismagius bursts above it. Torchic and Mudkip flinch and shiver, as they struggle to face the ghost.
âYou two think you can simply enter my domain, steal my victim, and just tear me apart?! Not likely, not with you leaving here alive!â
Nodding to each other, Mudkip and Torchic jump up and fire a combined attack of fireballs and water blasts. Mismagius floats around some of them, but slams back from the combination, and sinks back down. She struggles to stay afloat, as Chingling bounces over to her.
 âHey, youâre the creepy lady!â
 âW-what?â
 âCreepy, creepy, creepy!â
Bouncing around and floating up, Chinglingâs body glows with a light blue aura. The same encases Mismagius, who wildly shifts her eyes, unable to move. Flying forward, Chingling forces the ghost back into the rock walls. She then raises her hands up, and Mismagius rockets into the air, disappearing from sight.
 âBye-bye, creepy lady!â
Both Torchic and Mudkip are left to gawk at the child, who floats back to the ground and hops around happily. She spots her flowers floating in the water, and flops on the floor, sobbing. Mudkip nudges her, and Torchic huddles close to the baby, as the two quietly comfort her. In a short matter of time, the child calms.
Beneath the sunset filled sky, Mudkip and Torchic finally return to the Lunar Fortress. Several of their groupâs nocturnal teams are roused and stroll about, preparing themselves for their missions.
Picking at some flowers near the entrance, Mudkip gives a bouquet to Chingling, as the child excitedly bounces around.
âPlease, they were supposed to be back by now,â moans a faint voice. âYou canât just have me wait here.â
âMiss Chimecho, we must,â insists another voice. âMy wiâŚuh, M-Madam Bellossom is confident that her teams deliver with the best results.â
 âButââ
 âBig sis!â
Shaking her body and ringing, Chingling bounces around the main level of the fortress. From above, a bluish white fōrin wind chime bursts from a door and swoops down to the rescue team. Her tag-like tail scoops up the baby and cradles her close.
âChingling! Oh thank heavens, youâre ok!â She pulls her bell-shaped sister away from her, staring worriedly into her eyes. âDonât ever wander off from me again, not even for a second, understand?â
âSorry, Big Sis,â murmurs Chingling. âBut the flowers were pretty, and I wanted you to have some. Like these.â
Lifting her violets to show her sister, Chimecho blinks and gazes at them. Chingling droops in her grasp, sniffling.
âMom and dad used to get you flowers before your shows, so I justâŚI wanted to make sureâŚâ
âOh, Chingling, come here.â Chimecho nuzzles her sister close to her. âThank you. Itâs exactly what I needed before the show.â She sighs and holds her sister a little longer before finally pulling herself away. âAnd thank you two, I assume.â Chimecho smiles to Mudkip and Torchic, both returning her expression. âIâm so sorry to have put you out of your way, and then I fly down here without even explaining anythingââ
âNo need to worry miss,â insists Mudkip. âWeâd act the same way.â
âYeah, weâre just happy to help,â assures Torchic.
âThank you both so very much.â Chimecho cuddles Chingling again. âCome on, we have to get going. Iâve got a show to perform in less than an hour.â She returns her attention to her heroes. âAnd I owe you two some kind of reward, so Iâll have to get you one in the morning. Unless youâre interested in the show?â
âWe would be, miss, but weâre exhausted andââ
âYes, no, thatâs fine. I figured as much.â She beams again. âI will be back here first thing tomorrow, then.â
 âMiss, thereâs no needââ
âNonsense, Iâm insisting.â She drifts away and from the fortress. âCome along, Chingling, weâll be back for your friends tomorrow, ok?â
âYay!â Chingling turns back to Mudkip and Torchic. âBye pretty ladies! See you soon!â
Laughing, both wave back to the pair as they float into town. Someone sighs behind them, and the pair whirls around to see a chinchilla fixing her messy fur.
âGoodness, Iâm glad you two finally arrived when you did.â She nervously chuckles. âThis Chimecho was ready to really ruffle my fur.â
 âOur apologies, Madam Cinccino.â
âNone of that, ladies, you did fine work.â She smiles and nods. âThis is what will help our work flourish, and our teams grow ever stronger as we gain more missions.â She yawns. âIncidentally, itâs almost time for me to gather the first groups for the late missions, so if you two donât mind, Iâm off to find myâum, find Bellossom.â
âThatâs ok, maâam.â Mudkip shakes her head. âWeâre ready to get some rest ourselves.â She smirks as Torchic yawns.
âRight, rest. Well, off you two go.â Cinccino lowers her eyes. âAnd donât forget that you have work tomorrow.â
âYes, of course,â promises Torchic, as she follows Mudkip up the stairwell. âGoodnight.â
Together, the pair retires to the bedchambers of the teams that would stay in the fortress itself. They enter a room of their own and close the door, as they stroll to the crafted nest bed in the middle.
âSo, the kid wants to give us some real competition,â jokes Mudkip. âThink you can keep me interested before sheâs old enough to make a move?â
âNot sure,â determines Torchic. âAfter all, sheâs very good at it already.â
âAw, you should have more confidence in yourself,â advises Mudkip. âAfter all these years, youâre still as cute as ever.â
âHaâŚthink you can sweet talk me like that?â
âItâs worked for me so far,â points out Mudkip. She yawns, and Torchic yawns after her. âCome onâŚletâs get to bed on time tonight. Then we wonât be late again tomorrow.â
âBut I like spending the nightâŚtalking with you.â
âSure, sure.â Mudkip crawls to their nest of a bed. âLetâs talk right over here.â
âOk.â Torchic trudges over, and nuzzles herself into Mudkip. âLove you.â
 âLove you too.â
With a peck on the cheek, Mudkip cuddles into Torchic. Both yawn once more, before falling into a quick yet quiet slumber, fading away in their nest of twigs and violets.
Yay, cute couple by the end! Can you believe that Mudkip/Torchic has no ship name? Thereâs a variation of them that does, but for a plain pair of these two, nothing exists on the lists. So strange.
Anyway, this is sort of loosely based on an image that @starlys showed me of hers, which features some cute little girlfriends! So, I wanted to make her a fanfic that starred those two together.
It was fun to write adult versions of base stage Pokemon; I donât do that very often. But, they do make a really cute couple. Also, I included a few other pairings, all between lesbian couples. (Did you get that Bellossom and Cinccino were waifus? Was that obvious at all?) Also, lots of flower symbolism stuff, especially violets for lesbians. (Thatâs an official flower meaning, you know.)
Anyway, I do hope that you enjoyed the fanfic, @starlys and additional readers, and Iâm sorry it was late! Iâll need to try harder in the future. Again, hope you liked it, and take care!
starlys said: THank you this is an amazing birthday present!! Â My fave character from my fave fire emblem game. Â You did her justice! Â Sonyaâs ending in echoes made me so sad I live for anything that brings her happiness post game.
...
Oh, Iâm very glad you liked it!
Before I wrote this, I went and read Sonyaâs ending, and I was like, âThat sucks! Letâs fix that.â Then I read Gennyâs after research, and I was like, âThatâs boring, letâs mix and match.â And so I did.
Happy to hear I did your favorite the justice she deserved! Now she can live a happy life post-game because it all gets better from where she left off.
