For His Kingdom (part 52)
Masterlist
Martha and Akon have a conversation
“It seems a shame you are not a greater figure in the celebrations.” Martha leaned against the doorframe, having just handed the room’s occupant a salve.
Akon gave a grunt of laughter. “Madam, I have no need to be paraded and lauded. Being stuck at the high table is bad enough, and you would wish me more a center of attention? Leave that to the young man, and to you and your daughter — us old warriors have had enough attention, for good and ill.”
“Pah!” Martha tsked. “You deserve the same laudation.”
The former general waved that off, unlacing his boots to apply the salve to his road-sore feet. “The only thing I would ask is that if he becomes king again, I may serve him as a general. He is a better king than the one I served before, and the other men and I will protect both him and you for the rest of our lives if we are able.”
Even as she felt a blush rising, the previous evening’s conversation with her daughter slammed into Martha once more.
“I.. spoke with… Cinn” Maira had been flushed, words tumbling out. “He believed me — us. Saw me, understood why I said what I did even though it was unfair.” Her voice had become shaky. “And he… he cares about me. For me. He… he wishes to court me if I will accept it, once he… deals with political situations.”
Martha had been stunned, unsure what to say. Worry for her daughter’s safety rose in her, threatening to choke her. Royalty was a complicated thing, holding even more risks… even if the young king had great nobility—
Maira had continued, cutting off her train of thought: “I know it is all complicated and I know I am far from a worthy rank for his eye…”
At that, Martha had taken her daughter’s hands. “Rank is certainly a complicated thing in this situation with which you will have to contend, but do not ever think it changes your worth. But if you do not wish this, I shall speak with him on your behalf.”
“No, it is not that at all!” Her daughter’s face had reddened. “I… do wish it. He is… He is a good man.”
She could not disagree on that. “Yes, he is a good man, and though he has much to recover from, his character has never been something I would question.” She looked Maira in the eye. “But if he harms you, I am not afraid to do what I have to for your protection.”
Maira had nodded, and both women were too tired from the road to discuss further. She had intended to resume the conversation in the morning, but they had not had the time.
A wry smile touched her lips. “It is possible that will be easier than you might expect — to have us all in one place, at least.”
He raised an eyebrow, looking up from massaging the salve into his calloused feet. “Oh?”
“It appears that Lord Cinn desires to court my daughter. He has not made his intentions public, for he has concerns of rank and politics to deal with, but both appear to be set on this courtship from what she tells me.” Martha pushed herself off from the door, beginning to pace the room just inside the entrance. “It certainly will require her to learn much if it happens.”
Akon straightened, eyebrows raising but his glance darting aside and not quite meeting her eyes. She frowned, stopping to look at him, pointing accusingly.
“You knew something about this.”
“I had suspected it might happen. With the shaving…”
“Shaving?” Her voice carried an edge sharper than a blade.
The former general spread his hands in a conciliatory gesture, eyes apologetic. “Forgive me, I assumed she would have told you. It seems, with all he endured, the young king does not take well to the feel of a blade against his throat and somehow they have found that your daughter is the only one he feels safe having, ah, serve as a barber.”
Hurt welled up. Why had Maira not told her? Anger joined it. For all his honeyed words, if Lord Cinn was risking scandal with her daughter…
Akon saw the storm building in her face and stood. “Forgive me for not telling you sooner, madam. But I promise you, they have been discrete and nothing untoward has occurred.”
She took a breath, forcing her words to remain calm. “You have been present, keeping an eye on them, then?”
He shifted his weight awkwardly. “Not exactly, but I have remained on watch outside the door. If they, ah, were to do anything…” His ears were turning red, his whole face showing embarrassment. “I would have heard. They did not. If that helps.”
Martha threw up her hands. “Have none of you considered any of the risks of this? They are playing with scandal! And this is but a small thing when you consider all she will have to learn if they are serious with this courtship!”
Akon put his hands on her shoulders. “I know. But he will have support, as he is not at his strength to handle ruling alone. The steward king seems capable. And such courtship takes time. She will have time to learn. As to the shaving — they truly have been cautious, and I have done what I can to ensure that it will not become any sort of scandal.”
Martha’s shoulders sagged and she took a breath. “I suppose. If you will pardon me, I believe I need to speak with my daughter.”
Some old concept art for my own fantasy setting. I have several names for it, but none of them can be considered anything more than a placeholder name. Some call it "Teklaverse", from the name of one of the characters populating it. Others call it Rainverse, from my username. I usually use the "Enter Selfscape: World After Glory" name, that was partially suggested by @jaegershund. MOSTLY jokingly, because of how ridiculously-sounding it is. These are soldiers/warrior elite from a nation composed mostly of Scamps/Fiendlings/Devilings - basically, goat people. Kinda. Generally speaking.
They jump good, shoot bow good, sit in fortress in mountain. They value patience, self-improvement, and order. And they are DEFINITELY NOT just a stand-in for generic fantasy dwarves. Definitely. Not dwarves. Nope.
It's an old drawing, but one I still very much like looking at. It's a very good example of my love for the medieval (broadly speaking) aesthetic, and the fondness for historically-inspired military equipment mixing with my other interests - fantasy media, wargames, weapons and armor, etc. Oh and anthropomorpthic animals. Or furries. Yeah better expect lots of furries from this account. I'll have to revisit these guys soon, they deserve it.
I don't like that Rhaenyra's dress was white when she married Laenor because there was no reason to. From what I remember, they were not supposed to get married yet, it was just an announcement and celebration of their betrothal. They only had to get married then because of what happened with Criston and Joffrey causing panic and also resulting in Joffrey dying (from what i remember).
Not to mention, even if it was their actual wedding, medieval weddings didn't typically have the bride dressed in white, that was something that came about in the victorian era, with Victoria popularising it. Before that, brides typically wore their best dresses, and for a princess like Rhaenyra, that would mean going all out to show off your wealth with colour and jewellery.
All that is to say, I wish Rhaenyra had a black dress to contrast with Alicent's green dress, and to make more sense of how the two sides were created in their world. It would make sense that she also wears the colours of her house. She's supposed to be the heir, so she represents the very house of Targaryen, and the best way to show that is through her clothes, through the colours of the house (black and red).
Away from the colour of the dress, I don't like the hairstyle. It's obviously fake, Rhaenyra has never been shown to have thick enough hair to pull off that hairstyle. I like the red jewels put in the hair, but the hairstyle itself needs a change. They could've just kept the braid without that top part, and maybe have Rhaenyra wear a crown instead to symbolise to the court that she's the crown princess no matter who she marries (image is important, especially through appearance, even now. Already emphasised).
All this to say, the show fucked up.
