I went to a stand bar the other evening with some friends. It started pouring so we were there a while, watching the lightning and people running from the rain. In true stand bar spirit we shared beers and banter with a nice but socially inept salaryman. He got kind of excited, waving his hand in our faces. My friend who is pretty blunt said 近いです you're very close. We discussed personal space and he showed us pictures of his daughters. Eventually he was like wow this is so rare for me hanging out with foreigners! It's fun talking in broken Japanese! (片言日本語) My (Japanese) friend pointed out that we are kind of fluent and made him buy us beer. Then we took an umbrella and moved on!
