Mamamoo have the best stage names
This more so belongs on Kpop reddit, but I REFUSE to join that platform, so here we are.
3/4 members of Mamamoo have a stage name different from their birth name, and I love how unique and meaningful they are. Plus the names by themselves are really pretty.
Solar. Moonbyul. Wheein. Hwasa.
Let's talk about each name one by one.
The name comes from Solar's real name Kim YongSUN and the solfege syllables so-la.
Fun fact, Solar's stage name was supposed to be DoReMi, but since she's the designated belter of the group, she moved up the scale and picked the So-La notes as her stage name. Solar is also a reference to the sun, which works really well with her sunny, ray-of-sunlight persona.
Moonbyul comes from Moonbyul's own name - Moon Byulyi. This is probably my favourite one out of all.
Byul means star in Korean, hence she also sometimes calls herself Moonstar. This is probably just me overanalysing, but Moonstar sounds a bit like 'monster' and I think it fits Byul's rapping style perfectly, especially in the early days.
Also, the Moon and star present a beautiful juxtaposition to Solar's sun. It also aligns with her personality - When all is dark, Byul with her bright hamster smile will be there to pick you up.
Hwasa has always said she wants to keep her private life and idol life separate. And that's how Ahn Hyejin became the Hwasa we all know and love.
Hwasa means 'Shining brightly' in Korean. True to her name, Hwasa shines the brightest on stage. And again, I love how while the name ties in with the other two names with its correlation to light, it also represents Hwasa individually.
Wheein is the only member without a stage name, but it actually fits very well with her personality and the other members' chosen names.
Whee (Hwi) is onomatopoeia for the sound of wind, and I think flowing wind is the best metaphor for Wheein's personality - Playful but calm.
Wheein also means 'Shining people' in Korean, which fits with the whole Sun-Moon-Bright theme of Mamamoo.
Most idols I've seen have cool stage names but without a meaning, so I really respect the Mamamoo girlies and their team for their creativity.
