I’ll hit two years since officially starting transition this Tuesday. I’ve been using “Keira” with those who’ve known for all that time. But I was never certain it would be permanent or not.

I still haven’t legally changed my name, so I could still choose something else fairly easily. I would just need to do a lot of internet account updating (again), and there’s a few accessories I wouldn’t be able to well or would have to replace, but it’s not a huge undertaking to go with something different right now.

Keira was something I just started using online before I actually started transition. I had been using “Keira Stargazer” as a Star Wars game character / user name for a few years by that point, and I liked the wordplay of “Keira Incognita” with me being closeted and anonymous online. And the “Keira Stargazer” named evolved from the name of one my comic OCs.

But is Keira the right name for me? I don’t hate it, obviously, but I’m not sure I love it. It’s not that easy to pronounce. I constantly have to repeat my name when I tell it to people. Nobody ever spells it correctly since I use the less common spelling variant. Which is funny, because the only real person I know with this name spells it the same way, and everyone I can think of who spells it “Kira” is a fictional character.

I have long tried thinking of a first name that starts with the same letter of my given name that I actually like, but I have been unable to come up with anything satisfactory.

But here’s the thing. There is a variant spelling of the feminine version of my given names that does have a diminutive form that I like a lot more and that is not too far off from “Keira.” So if I go with this option, I could keep the same first initial on my legal name — and maybe annoy my parents a bit less — while using a nickname that still starts with a K and ends in an A.

There are other options I’ve been considering too. Some may end up as my middle name (possibilities include Mary or Athena). And of course, there will be my super-secret true name that will be known only to me so that the Fae can never have power over me.
