I see Stabitha in the scene from the 1955 movie, Picnic. Where Hal tells Madge that he’s a bum and about the stuff he’d been through and tells her if she wants to get away from him and go cry home to mama, fine! But instead she kisses him. And then later, he tells her “You make me feel important–no! You make me feel… patient.” And damn, if I don’t just eat that sap up with a spoon just in general.
Stan is used to people letting him down, seeing the worst in him, assuming the worst of him so fine! Leave, then! See if he cares! Tabitha is similar, but also more open in her desire to see things from others’ perspectives, so she sees right through the bluster, sees the hurt, sees his flaws but also his attributes and doesn’t leave. Instead, draws him closer, accepts him as he is. I think he does the same with her, where he can see through her defense mechanisms and understand why she has them without judgment.
