Sir Dominic Evermore is a knight-turned-advisor in a rather difficult position. As a young man, he was told (by either an old woman he helped or a fairy, haven't decided) that he would one day love a "lady of starlight", a woman whose beauty seemed to be as bright and as elegant as the night sky. He, like many young men, worked to become a knight and travel the land (think Andalasia, we're going Enchanted here) to find her, saving people and doing good.

When he came back to his home kingdom, he saw a woman with hair of white-gold and silvery-pale skin and thought, why, this must be my lady of starlight. Imagine his confusion, then, to learn that this woman was none other than the new queen, married to the young king on the very day of his crowning.

Troubled, but dutiful in his word, Sir Dominic pledged his fealty to the queen and served at the royal couple's side. He offered council based on his adventures and what he'd seen of the world, all while telling himself that he was... fine. He served dutifully and looked out for their welfare, and never found the queen not beautiful. Is that not love, patient and steadfast? Surely everything is as it should be.

But the young king - who was very little like his father, who Sir Evermore greatly admired - grew greedy with power. He sought to conquer lands Dominic advised peace with, and often made ambitious moves for glory and legacy. Sir Evermore's council grew more contrary, and the two would even argue - and the royal court, not wanting to contradict their king, began to consider Dominic a wicked advisor who wanted to keep the kingdom weak.

All the while the queen looks on, elegant and fair. And fifteen or so years after coming home, Sir Dominic genuinely wonders if that promise wasn't a warning - for how can she see what her husband has become and not weep? How can she not be afraid?

from here, I'm kind of lost as to *what* the inciting incident is, but I know there is one. Dominic leaves the castle following some Endangered Youth (perhaps the child of the old king who disappeared while he was gone?) and he ends up in Our World, searching for his missing charge. I do want it to be like Enchanted, but instead of a Disney Princess it's a fairytale knight/"Evil advisor" who's actually the good guy with a bad king. His lady of starlight is actually one of the female leads (either my existing OC Lorelei or a new character), but that's the part where the plot is a tangled ball of yarn. I know how we got here, but haven't quite figured out where "here" is.
