Random tangent while I power through an ask: what's up with the save points in the Great Maze?
They're your only break while in the Great Maze and, as stated by the dojo, your base of operations. You go to the rotating Smash logo and heal up; this is one of the only times you get to see the Smash Bros logo during SSE, and quite possibly the only instance of it if you don't count items like the bumper or trophies/trophy stand. There's a giant paper-like tear in the sky leading to actual Subspace. The yellow rest areas have a weird greenish-yellow tint while the pink rest areas seemingly lack a tint, or the tint is much less noticeable at least.
Anyone else notice how huge the moon looks in Smash sometimes?
I know the Temple of Light subarea in the Light Realm is most likely in part a Kid Icarus reference (given the music is from KI:U + the Mimicutie spirit and Pit being found in this area). But I think it's worth mentioning that the shape of the structure where the altar is gets referenced by Galeem during his Intimidation attack.
Sending my personal headcanons for Tabuu/Subspace because why not
Tabuu and Subspace are one and the same; a living, breathing void dimension that lies in between every universe in the multiverse. Tabuu is less of a person and more of Subspace's consciousness given form. Basically Subspace is to the multiverse what outer space is to Earth, except it's alive and the dimension itself is the body and Tabuu is the mind/soul. Lonely and spiteful, forced to watch over the universes it borders while unable to interfere. Tabuu initially planned to bring more than just the World of Trophies into Subspace, but started there despite knowing it would have to go up against some of the multiverse’s greatest heroes and multiple god killers because the World of Trophies has connections to other universes and his victory there would mean easy access to every universe it’s connected to. A very high risk, high reward plan. Speaks like Fecto Forgo {broken English + big words}, if that makes any sense.

Dunno how to be coherent abt this rn but. The entire Red + Lucas section spanning from The Ruined Zoo up to the Ruins/Ruined Hall. Why is that there. What's up with that
Okay so wait. I have thought of the implications of the line "Master Hand is now more a part of Subspace than our own world" so much but the most I had it was that until like a certain point while recovering he still had like...some connection to that world, though even then my understanding itself is pretty vague. What do you interpret it is as meaning?
Kind of a weird one, but I think it could imply Master Hand (and possibly Crazy Hand by extension) already had some connection to Subspace before the SSE incident, and that Tabuu's chains only drew him closer to the Subspace side, however that works. The dojo tends to interchangeably use past and present tense in describing the events of the game (even though it assumes you beat the mode already), so I didn't take it to imply any lingering side effects (but it doesn't imply otherwise either so interpret how you will).
Somehow or another, Master Hand was able to make his way to Subspace without passing through a Subspace Bomb's explosion (none existed by that point), something the fighters are unable to do (including Bowser, Ganondorf, and Wario, given their communication with MH for most of the campaign is over video)--and Tabuu is explicitly unable to leave Subspace altogether. Furthermore, Dharkon is only able to get into the Light Realm by tearing a hole into it so that it can convert it to Dark Realm territory (thus prompting Galeem to retreat)--something that Master Hand also didn't need to do to access Subspace. There's an overall implication that he had an easier time getting to it than any other core boss did crossing over into another realm. (Weirder still when you consider there's just as much contrast between the World of Trophies and Subspace as there is between the Light & Dark Realms.)
I think an underrated aspect of the Smash Bros universe is that it executes its "high tech fantasy" motifs in a way that gives it a kind of... alien feel?
Case in point: the Bonus Stage from Ultimate.
Like it starts off normal and then WHOOAAA WHAT THE FUCK
Kinda goes into my post about backgrounds from before, but this one really stands out for me just because there's SO much going on that you never have the time to properly notice bc you're trying to avoid getting sucked in by an approaching void.
You have the fairly normal-looking sky background, and then a spire of... something, followed by a cyber-like background with what looks like a wormhole, and then another spire followed by a space-like background. Are those textured spire things like the edge of a wormhole or something? The texturing on the foreground elements brings to mind the World of Light background seen after the playable Master Hand fight, and the breakable crystal blocks are very visually similar to the crystal spikes seen on Battlefield.
I really enjoy this stage in particular because it cranks the weirdness up to 11 yet at the same time it still feels connected to the Smash Bros universe. It feels like finally getting a proper look at the true alien feel that the Smashverse has that you normally only get in bits and pieces.
